I'm putting the finishing touches on my Forgeworld Hellfire Dreadnought for my Space marines and I wanted to try lots of free hand scripture and decals to it.
I got the scripture stuff down pretty well but I'm struggling to freehand an Inquisition symbol or a simple 1st company symbol on certain parts of the armor.
Pics are coming.
Edit: The main problem is that the symbol doesn't look solid enough. But if I put on too much paint, it goes past the lines of an acceptable "I" or "1"

I would say keep the paint thin but layer slowly, expanding it with each stroke until it gets to the right size you want. I would start with the vertical part of the 'I' then once that is how you want it, cross it at each end - trying to keep it symmetrical. Then you can add the '=' on either side.
Its all about control and keeping the paint smooth enough and thin enough to control but not too thin. And going slowly. Stage by stage.
Further to what Kuffy says...:
Keep your paint fairly thin, and don't be too worried about painting over it and starting again if you make a mistake.
It is much better to go over it a few times with thin paint than to end up with a lumpy finish because you used too much paint.
If the area is fairly large and flat, try drawing it on (very lightly) with a sharp pencil.
Also, make sure you have some reference material available to look at, it's much easier to 'copy' from an image than it is to try and draw from memory. Even if you are doing your own take on the =][= or the 1, an image will be sure to help.
Take it slow, and think before you paint.
Good luck, and be sure to post up the results...!
