Apologies if this is the wrong forum, it looked most suitable.
Has anyone attached the arms of regular marines or chaos marines with magnets before?
i want to attach my Aspiring champions arm with a magnet dso i can choose between a power fist or a power weapon. i have read guides where this is done on tanks so am aware of the tecniques involved however the point of my question is:
what size magnets?
i have seen some 1mm x 1mm and some 2mm by 1mm disc magnets (rare earth/Neodymium ), i think both would fit the model (i.e. be small enough) however im concerned about the strength of these small magnets.
The models are plastic so the weight isnt great, what have others experienced? will 1mm by 1mm be strong enough?
does anyone have any tips that might be useful?
any help is greatfully recieved!
The rare earth ones are all pretty strong, I've had luck with magnetising tau stealth suit guns on, though you will need to pin the arms aswell, or use 2 magnets per arm (good luck with fitting those!) as otherwise, the arm will spin freely, and he'll look like he's standing around with nothing to do most of the time. Pin + small magnet on the torso and arm FTW!
If I've replied, i've probably used Italics...

I just recently did what you are talking about. For my aspiring champ, I've magnetized his arm, and with another champ, I plan on making a set of arms with the different marks of the gods on the shoulder pads and magnetizing those arms as well to match my magnetized icons. Yes, I am an options freak.
I found that with the shoulder pad on, the arm could accept a good sized magnet. I use another in the body and it worked rather well. Just drill very slowly.
I used the 1/8 by 1/32 rare earth magnets. Here is the site I have recently used to get them.
I'll try to post a pic later showing what I've done so far.
Nice 1 Warmonkey! any pictures you have would be ost apreciated!
i am doing somthing similar, have 2 power fists and 2 power swords and im painting them in a 'signature' colour so they can be put on any squad to look and work well.
on the subject of pins, are you having any problem with the arm drooping warmonkey?
i used 1/16th inch tall by 1/32 in diameter. i think. look at the smallest size amazingmagnets.com has to offer, and i think you'll find them. i even managed to magnetize bolters to hands. pics possibly coming soon. but probably not, as i'm lazy.
i drilled it the handle holding hand and corresponding part, then the muzzle grippy part. then glue a magnet flat to the inside of the marine's left hand. so.....
1. drill out holes: Right Hand, Corresponding part, and the grippy part. make the grippy part extra deep, and make it longer to compensate for mess ups.
2. glue magnets the RIGHT WAY, meaning CORRECT POLARITY into where you want them. besides putting the magnets in the holes i said, glue the one to the marine's palm, near the center.
3. eat and enjoy.......i mean paint. then you can eat it.
Well here is one of my champions. As you can see, it is pretty straightforward. I put the model together and drilled a 1/8 inch hole in the torso where the arm connects. Then I also put a 1/8 inch hole in the arm where it connects to the torso. I did this with the shoulder pad on to reinforce the arm bit.
Just make sure your magnets are polarized the same way and you can swap out bits between champs. For some reason I didn't do the power weapon magnetized, but maybe I will snap it off. My main reason for magnetizing him was so that I could have the correct mark with the correct Icon (Which is also magnetized.) I did realize that I gave misinformation, I used a 1/8 by 1/16 inch magnet. Because they are larger, I have no problems with droopage.
