What 40K Chaos Theme looks best for tournament display awards?
Ok so what do you think is the 'best' looking type of 40k Chaos Force for painting standards?
I will be starting a real high quality painted army soon and I cant decide what looks best.
I will be painting X3 units of marines, X1 unit of raptors, 3X rhinos, 2X Predators, X1 unit of Teminators and probably X1 unit of Bezerkers to play with for competions &HQ leaders. But I want a great looking army also.... here lies the problem.
So its a competative 1850 point army that is looking for best painting awards.
I get the feeling that a uniform army always looks best if you want a pro looking force. But with a army that is build to win tournament games its bound to feature mixed chaos powers for leader (slaanesh) close combat (khorne). My gut reaction is that only a pure cult force would ever win a best painted award rather than a themeless bunch of marines.
My options would be:
* 1 Chaos God only, so a pure Cult army. slaanesh most likley for me. All same style, colour, conversions.
* Mixed Chaos powers but a simple army that looked like an Eavy Metal force
Would reflect multiple powers and look nice- but overall on a table??
* A legion or codex force that ALL looked the same (ie Black legion where the fluff suggests that the units would remove icons)
*Make my own chapter and invent some fluff.
Ok so any ideas what you think is best?
And any advice what won from prior grand tournament events?
I agree that making your own army is the best way to go. The way that I make the various cult marines fit in with my traitors is to do certain pieces every model the exact same. For instance, all of their shoulder pads are black. Also the various rhinos are painted in the renegade chapter colors with trim the color of the cult marines armor (black for normal marines).
Just a few ideas...

What you will need to get attention is something that catches the eye. This means using attractive colours that will get attention. Or you can work on perfecting a colour scheme. Often people will like to see something new. At a competitive level I doubt anyone has ever gotten much attention for reproducing GW's painting and display style. This is because GW's models are painted so that it isn't that hard to copy what they do as the colour schemes and methods are all well done but not so good as to be impossible to copy.
Basically you should do something good looking which also has something original in it. I think it is really best to produce an army which is cohesive looking. An army which seems to use the same colour scheme and so on. Armies often look best when they seem to fit together.
You could try to include varied units but I suggest having the same basic colour scheme on them. In my Tyranids I include varied units (blood-sucking Genestealers, toxic Carnifexes, scorpion Hormagaunts) but I use the same basic colour scheme on them. I suggest you try to use a similar method.
Another way to use units such as Berzerkers when following a Slaaneshi theme, is to use 'Druggies' in place of them. Just use appropriate models and use the same stat lines.
