Hey, I am making a mixed trooper guard retinue and in it there are gong to be DKOK, Steel Legion, Vostroyans, Valhallans, Catachans, and maybe a few Cadians. So far I have make a hat for a guardsman out of miliput. The hat is Vostroyan (my brother hates them and doesn't want to pay for them so I am making them). However the overcoat/ trench coat I am having trouble sculpting. It is annoying and I finally admit I need help. Can anyone help me? Thanks.
robes are very simple to make, assuming you don't try to put the hoods up.
your first problem is that you probably arent' shaving details. Greenstuff becomes weak if it's too thin. Additionally, a strip that is thick enough, will be too thick look like cloth. So, you need to trim away the 'body-fat' of the models. All folds in the cloth, all details, ammo pouches, vests, anything that you intend to put under the robes, need to be cut flat.
from there, if you are making robes, or (like i think you are) Vostroyan trenchcoats- the easiest place to start is the legs. Roll out a sheet of GS that is thick enough to stay tough. If you want, you can taper the edges with a knife, so that it looks like thinner cloth. Wrap this around the legs. If you want the robe to look like a solid piece, use water and a knife-edge to blend the seam. Otherwise, leave it overlap and just flatten it out to a suitable 'clothing' thickness with your knife.
The torso is made most easily if you only have the head attached. Test fit the arms, then work around the area where they attach. Again, roll out a sheet of GS. The sheet should be large enough to cover the model's back. (depending on your skill, you could cut small semicircles in the square where the head and arms would be, then wrap it around the model and only have to blend in two areas) However, for now it is best to put a square on the back. Now make two small recangles. Thes will atttach to the back square, and frame the chest, like the two halves of the robe's front. Blend these into the waist, and into the back. Make sure to leave room for the arms!
All that's left to do is wait until that robe dries. At the end of it all, you can go back and make small coils to add folds and wrinkles. You have to blend them into the robe obviously, so this can be tricky but it's worth the time.
Scultping plain clothes is difficult, like pants and shirts and such. So often it's best to just go with the GW models. Clothes can be made the same way as the robes, but require you to cut away more of the plastic, and do ALOT more blending, and you have to be good at sculpting in the folds or else they just look like body fat.
It also helps if you have something to copy off. If you can have photos or actual minis with robes in front of you for reference you'll have a better idea what each fold of clothing can/will look like.
And over there we have the labyrinth guards.
