REALLY GOOD IDEA!
Ok, Im ok, but i was thinking about how to fit a 4' by 4' gaming board for my Space Wolves 13th Co. into my small, crammed room. Then an idea hit me. What if you made a 2 story gaming board? It would be a cityfight ruling area, and it would be 2 levels of gaming fun (quite a nice little comment). You would have like, lets say a first floor in a large training complex, then you could take stairs (which would be relatively large, and you could send guys down, there would also be a ramp for vehicles, the bottom floor would be a giant bomb shelter.
Just imagine this: You pick up little dots on a radar, and you send a scout outside to see what is going on, and he sees (dum dun deeee) Tyranid surrounding your complex. You set up a defense by the door, and your Terminator squad stands in front of it. Then, POUND, POUND, POUND! The door is sent flying, smashing a Terminator against the nearby wall, and a Carnifex walks in, shaking off your hails of Bolter fire like slingshots. It impales a Terminator and spits acid at your Rhino. Then you order your Devastators to unleash hell on it. The Carnifex explodes, spraying acidic blood everywhere. Then masses of Genestealers run in. You order your men to fall back downstairs as you see them slice your mens' power armor like a butter knife through...butter. You close the door. And again, POUND POUND POUND. Genestealers run through, but youre well prepared, your men unleash hails of Bolter fire against the enemy. Corpses are stacking up, enemy and yours, and youre finding out that youre running out of room to fall back to...You see a Zoanthrope smile wickedly, and you've just devised an ingenius plan of your own. Both sides are about to battle it out, to the last man, or beast standing.
So, is this a good idea or what. But, ive realized that some gamers might say that it would be inconvenient to have to be looking at the top or bottom floors at different times. And some might say that the space would be annoying, but thats why i would take 1 and 1/2 foot beams and put them on the bottom, and rest the top on that. I would have no trouble making the board (I posted a lot of scenery and terrain stuff in the past as EldaRulEveryone, but I forgot my password).
Any comments (negative or positive) are aprreciated.
Hmmm I would say that your idea is very good...
Although to me it simply turns a little too much over to "Spacehulk".
You could proparbly make it a standard cityfight table, only in two floors. But I suggest you drop the "open the doors" ideas... It kinda makes things more complicated...
Other than that it sounds like a great idea... a hive terrain right?

I WAS IN THE IMPERIAL (Norwegian) GUARD!
yeah, but the doors idea was just to make the story a little more realistic. hive terrain yeah.
hey good idea..i just got all kinds of images of massive underground cities with rediculously large pillars ..sorta like Midgar from ff7...ooooh..must...build...city..@.@
I have been rolling the idea of making some sewer system terrain for necromunda/warhammer.
Your idea sort of reminded me of it with the multi-leveled combat, I like it allot
I was planning on making eight two by one foot sections of various sewer workings each with an entry and exit at pre designated areas, or a dead end. This way the 4x4 table could be moved around each fight to allow for some interesting fights. Here is where the "multi level" game would come in. I wanted to build 4 or 5 "sewer entrances" to place at appropriate locations on a standard 4x4 table, each entrance would correspond with an entrance into the sewers, allowing models to enter and exit threw them to move about the field.
There’s my idea in a nutshell.
So back to your idea, I like it; you could throw in an elevator or something for another passage to the lower levels. If you wanted you could even add a third level for more chaotic combat.
Yeah i was thinking about the concept of like a freight elevator, you know. and i was thinking, what if, because this method was faster than using stairs (i was thinking you would teleport down) there was a risk that it would be stuck, removing the piece from the game, as if it had been killed. that might not be such a good idea, but who knows. by the way the sewer idea is really cool. for the third floor i was thinking of just putting some towers with ladders up there. the mission for the map would have to be something like the defenders can use 1500 pts and the attackers 2000 or 1750 or something, or a meat grinder style mission.
p.s. edicius, did you read my reply to your doomtrain idea, i think that its really cool.
You could try and design it like a carpark, with access for infantry and vehicles, then you could just assume that the carpark is littered with booby traps and stuff like that, trashed up from rebellions and all that.
It would be rather cool................................................

If you ever make it you need to post up pictures becaues it's a great idea. Gotta make both boards stable though. Otherwise a "THE SKY IS FALLING! THEY SKY IS FALLING!" might happen. Other than that it's a neat idea.
yeah ill definitely post it when im done. andhas always been a gnawing fear. either i would have to make it very stable, and i mean very stable, or i could just make 3 different boards and place them next to each other so that they would all be flat and it would not have such a sweet 3 floor feeling but it would be more safe and less risky (for instance someone is reaching for a towering wraithlord and SMACK! the board falls on everything and im being slapped by people and made fun of by my parents that my idea was stupid. any opinions on whether it shoudl be stacked one on top of the other or laid side by side i would be apprectiated (pros and cons)THE SKY IS FALLING!
just make two 2 story boards. lots of levels but the risk for collapse is minimized.
