    How to "scorch" something?

    Hi:

So I'm painting up a couple of melta guns, and I've always wondered how to paint the nozzles (or the flamer nozzles, for that matter) so that they have that "burnt" tip that fades to metal. What's the best way to do it? I was going to basecoat in boltgun metal, then ink it for depth, but then what?

Mickey: "You're just making this up as you go along!"
The Doctor: "Yuuuup. But I do it brilliantly!"

You don't even have to ink it... Highlight the edge with Boltgun Metal and then highlight the highlight with Chainmail or Mithril Silver...

But I personally prefer the corroded version... As drybrush Tin Bitz, then drybrush Fiery Orange and ready!

Yes - drybrush as said above, or use shade of brown...

Drybrush? You mean on the edges? What about the rest of the "tube" of the nozzle? How do you "fade" it from brown to metal?

Yes Canew I mean only the edges... or all if you want to make it look more rusty!

No for the burnt... You can use watered down Boltgun Metal as a glaze. This means 5:1 water to BM (something to resemble dirty water) and then you start leaving layers... Highlight and you are ok... At least that's my method!

The vest way to do it, is to just paint the metal normally. Then take scorched brown and drybrush the end of the nizzle and about 1/2 way back as well. Leave it relatively light on the edge. Then do the exact same with chaos black, except leave some of the brown showing.

    I would suggest:
Paint the metals as you would normally (I tend to go for: boltgun metal, wash black, highlight boltgun, highlight chainmail).
Then, streakily paint about half the length of the barrel with thinned tin bitz.
Then, do the same, but paint about 2/3rds of the tin bitz area with thinned scorched brown.
Finally, repeat with about 1/3rd of the scorched brown area with black.

    Should look plenty burned up.
