Since I'm planning on assembling some Assault squads (one ten marines w/o Jump Packs and transported via LRC, the other 5-10 Marines w/Jump Packs), AND I have taken a peek onto adresses in the Armor Types thread that was recently up in the Amicus, an idea came to me - let's equip the whole Jump Pack squad with Mk 3 armor! I mean the "newer" type of Mk 3, the one with this "armored tabard" and the grey knight-like helmet.
Some conversion work would be needed for sure, but I don't think it would really be that hard.
The armor will not exactly be Mk 3 either, but rather a modification of existing armor types based upon the way Mk3 looked like. This to say, I'm already converting a gunner for my sratch-built Rhino to have Mk 3 style helmet...
OK, after I wrote the above the concept evolved a while and intertwined with my army's fluff.
The Dark Angels Third Company has suffered heavy losses of equipment and supplies during the 13th Black Crusade, and the fact that shortly after most of the co was wiped out and their armor and equipment was lost didn't really help with this.
After repairing the armor of the survivors, only suits of Powered Armor that remained in the Company's possession were six Mk III "Armorum Ferrum" suits barely in working order, and heaps of Mk VII spare parts, most of which were beyond repair.
It was ordered that a young, controversive Techmarine named Malachai would seek for a solution. It just happened so that he has very recently completed research into possible applications of Mk 3 components in newer suits.
Needless to say, he has managed to crossbreed most of Mark 3 construction with multiple parts coming from Mark 7. Thus was born what later earned itself a nickname of "Iron Eagle" or "Aquila Ferrum" armor. Altough the name was not really appropriate, as the source of the Mk 7's name, the Imperial Eagle on the chestplate, was gone, the name stuck.
The early battlefield tests have proven that not only the "Aquila Ferrum" was easily equal of Mark 7, with most of the joints between plating refined to the same quality as met in Mark 7, and the actuators replaces by the very Mark 7 ones as well; as the armor retained Mk 3's heavy frontal protection (though merging in Mk 7 parts as well), yet retaining Mk 7's agility, it was much better suited to frontal assault role and close quarters combat than any of the two.
Since that time, Malachai has become well known in the Chapter, and it is only a matter of time for him to be introduced to Deathwing.
Aquilla Ferrum suits have not only become permanent part of Third Company Assault Squads' equipment, but also the Masters of other companies have asked Malachai for replicating this wonder for their troops, over half of the requests coming for the Ravenwing.
As all of the parts were modified so to be easily compatibile with the other types of Powered Armor, it is not problematic to combine, for example Mark 6 helmet or Mark 6 shoulderpads with this suit.
END OF FLUFF.
Here is the concept skech I threw together on Saturday:
Iron Eagle Powered Armor
AI, AII - variations of Aquila Ferrae helmet
B - alternative type of breastplate, closely resembling ones used in Mark 8 "Errant" armor
C - different leg armor type
D - non-standard type of mono-edged close combat weapon
What do you think of the idea?
I am grudgingly impressed. I didnt expect something like this to come from you. Post some pictures when completed.
"It fits like clothes made out of wasps!"
Basis was formed from images in the "make your own index astartes" package that is spread widely on the net. Took parts of several ones that were close enough and re-worked in MS Paintbrush. Nothing hard to do.
Why did you say you did not expect something the likes of from me?
Is anybody here going to tell me what does he think of the idea?
Looks good to me.....

What could I improve in the concept?
I think to complete the armour, you should put on one of those extended armour thingies which is found on grey knights and the emperors champion on the left armour pad. I would use the basis of the as a grey knight with parts replaced - easiest way in my opinion .

sounds like it would look pretty cool

Hmm... I think there is such a bit on the CSM sprue. I was going to use the arms from there anyway.I think to complete the armour, you should put on one of those extended armour thingies which is found on grey knights and the emperors champion on the left armour pad.
