Welcome to Librarium Online!
For my current Ultramarine army I'm including a couple of Apocalypse formations. One of those will be the Land speeder, Whirlwind thing.
As I will be playing with the models in normal games too and to add with that, I don't really like the large scanner mounted below the Land speeder + I don't have space because of the Assault cannon, I´m looking for an alternative.
The overal theme for the bases of my army is Snow covered city ruins.
So I´m thinking to make some sort of scanner on the base as opposed to on the vehicle so it is still clear which vehicle is the `spotter`.
Any ideas on what to do? I came up with something like this; have a single scout model on a 60mm base along with binoculars or something and have the Speeder fly/hover above it.
Any experience on when a transparant flying peg is modelled to high for it to break when a speeder is attached. I don't tend to go to high, but having a scout model nearly being decapitated by a low flying speeder would look silly.
The speeder is already glued and being painted while writing this, so it's purely a scenic base solution.
Personally I really dislike those plastic flying stems. I tend to find they break more often than not even with plastic models mounted upon them. I'd suggest either drilling a pin through the entire stem or replacing it altogether with a length of brass rod - then you can have it as long as you like without the worry of breakage. If you want to keep the plastic stem then consider mounting it on some of the ruins for extra height; still easily broken though.
As for the 'spotter' role. I quite like the scout idea actually; it is fluffy and has the added bonus of having all the plastic parts you need readily available. Give the scout an auspex or something similar and a pair of binoculars and you should have yourself a spotter. You could have some sort of ground scanner instead of the scout - perhaps the land speeder is dropping off some kind of remote auspex probe. The probe itself would be fairly easy to model - just some spare bits and the SM vehicle radar-dish thing. I'm not quite sure how you would represent it being dropped off by the speeder though - maybe have a few mounted on a rack on the underbelly.
Whichever way you go about it I wish you good luck. Post up some pictures when its finished.
WEll there you go, I was going to suggest something along those lines. Cant wait to see everything painted.
can't wait to see it finished.
question: what is the small "flakes" you have on the base in the first set of pics?
they seem to be really really really small shavings from a plastic sprue..
Looks pretty good, I'd get rid of the scope in his left hand though.
Maybe make him with a hand on the binoculars and looking at the auspex with his other.
Besides; the scope was some sort of solution as I didn't have anything else to put in his left hand and the scope w/ hand is a single bit.
Thanks for the comment though
