This thread will get updates as i go along. I want my mounted lord to be riding a giant spider, and at first i was going to use the shelob model, but having given it some thought, ive decided to go all out and scratch build the whole model!
Ive started with the lord himself. I took the dark angels upgrade sprue and used the robed head and body as the start of the model. I filed off the dark angels winged sword from the robed chest and added a chaos backpack.
I then took these robed legs from the same upgrade sprue and chopped off the legs. Next i hacked up an old chaos marine and stole his legs, and attached them to the cloak. Then i shoved a bit of greenstuff into the gaps and created the tops of his legs.
Now, this guys is going to be sat in a chair, so thats what im busy making right now. Ill keep adding photo's to this post as more parts are made until the full chair is completed.
To start with, heres the foot rests. Again they are from the upgrade sprue. The are parts of a landspeeder i think?
More parts of the chair stuck together.
He looks fun. I like the results you have with that chair, it looks like a chair instead of random bits of junk, often simple things like chairs go wrong. The look for him is good to. He looks like a big important guy who sits on his giant pet spider bossing people about.
I will be interested to see what you do for the spider. That you are going to make it yourself sounds like quite a challenge. The advantage of making it your self is that you can decide how it will look. Do beware that sometimes the size of the model can be as much of a problem as the details when building it yourself.
I have found this out with some of the Tyranids I have converted. Insecty legs go all over the place. I guess that is why bugs are better climbers than us and also faster, well they would be faster if they were as big as us. Here is a google search for spiders.
I suggest that you look up every spider image you can find. I think some spiders have a sleeker look and others are heavier. Looking at them also helps you to iron problem parts when you are making you beasty. I have found looking at scorpion images helps me out when I do my scorpion-Tyranids.
You should look at this lot too, Sectaurs! They have bug folk riding bugs. Down the page is Skulk and Trancula, a bloke riding a giant spider. Skulk and Trancula were two of my favourite toys when I was litttle.8X They may be helpful to inspire you or at the very least help you come up with a spidery name for some of your spider chaos types.
So far so good man
Just posting, so I get regular updates.
Good luck with it!
Update time! Not a huge amount done as ive been busy painting the other marines. The Lord and his chair are finished. I might add a few little details later on but for now im happy with how it looks. The lord will be getting a head for his staff, ill probably be greenstuffing that. Also the spiders frame is almost completed. Ive included a few shots with the lord on its back and a normal marine for size comparison. This beast is gonna be HUGE! Its leg span wont even fit on a CD so ive no idea how im going to base him! Anyway C+C welcomed as always.
The back of the chair, made from more parts of the dark angels upgrade sprue
The lord gets a boltgun and a greenstuffed bit of robe between his legs to hide the lack of a cod piece The staff's shaft is from a fantasy ogre.
Wire frame for the spider is started, two legs and a head to go.
Size comparison pics.
THe wire frame spider looks adorable ^_^
Right, update time. Ive used milliput to give the spider a base on which to build the spider and given it some very basic muscles.
Next i started working on the mouth. I tried various styles of mouth, fangs, feeders before settling on an open, snarling style of mouth.
With the teeth in place i set to work and build the rest of the head around them. Ive used tyranid bits and greenstuff for the head to give it an organic feel and also because it was a hell of a lot easier than sculpting the whole thing! And thats it for now, next, the legs!
That spider head is awsome...if a bit creepy...
see my lighting a monolith project..
At first I saw the wire frame spider and I was laughing to myself. Then I saw the later work...

I agree - it also looks very menacing, which is the point.
