I usually prime my models after I'm done building them, however, after looking at the new ork trukk I noticed that it will be hard to reach some places after the model is put together.
My question is; can i spray the sprues with primer (GW Undercoat) before building the model and will the glue still hold just as strong?
sorry if this is a newb question, I'm just really used to priming after building.
I wouldn't; cement really only works when you've got bare plastic surfaces to contact.
Actually, I'm doing a Rhino in pieces so I can paint the interior, so I think I can offer a little help on this. The first thing is to figure out how you're going to assemble the model; determine what pieces can be assembled and pre-glued vs. which you'd want to put on later. Assemble what you can, and personally, I'd get as much completely put together as possible.
Then, if possible, mask off the areas that will be glued with masking tape or some such. That way, you can spray prime, paint, finish coat, and remove the tape to have a bare plastic surface to glue to. If you can't mask it with tape (too small, for example), just prime/paint/finish over it, and then scrape those areas carefully down to bare plastic.
Another thing that may help you is to know that not every edge needs to be glued in place in order to hold the model together (although it helps). A square panel, for example, probably only really requires that you glue down two sides to hold both it and the model together.
I build, I convert, I sometimes paint, and once in a while, if I'm really lucky, I might even play.
my suggestion woul be to simply scrape off the undercoat with an exacto knife(like you take off mould lines) or even a file. just gently work the edge along the part you want to glue to scrape it off.
