Hey I need some help. I just recently bought a terminator captain and I would like advice on how to paint his robes. I've looked at some pictures of models that have robes on and their painters did a great job of showing shadow in the recesses. I would really appreciate it if you guys threw out some tips or just tell me how you paint your robes. I know this is pretty stupid, but I really want this guy to look great.
try doin a base of a dark colour, then a medium colour layered on top, leaving the recesses dark, then very lightly layer over that with a light colour...
ill get u an example of mine:
sorry bout the pick, i had no others of choice with robes....but it shows adequately how you paint the folds in cloth, whcih then looks multi layered
hope this helps
I paint my robes the medium colour first, for an off-white robe that would be bleached bone or maybe even white. Then I shade it with a watered down ink, brown in this case. Then I highlight it up again with bleached bone and white using a mix of drybrushing and layering, whatever looks best. Usually I drybrush a little first to get some transitions and then I paint on the "highest" highlights (can you say that? :) to get them smoother.
I prime with white spray BTW, not black.
No pictures though...
Well here's an example of one of my Remigo Veterans... Here's my technique:
First I painted the robe Festering Blue (that's the base colour of the robe). Next I shaded the folds with Sky Blue Ink. When the ink was dry I highlighted (not drybrushed mind you) with Lightning Bolt Blue. When dry I drybrushed with Ice Blue and finally gave it a light drybrush of Skull White.
It's a very easy technique but it is also rather time consuming... Still the result is pretty cool...
Thanks for all the responses. I think i'm gonna make the robe bleach bone with skull white highlights. What color do you think I should use in the recesses? I was thinking about chaos black, but I'm not sure how'd that turn out.
i think bronzed flesh it a good color for the recesses and then highlight with the other colors, beached bone and skull white.if you want to be realy fancy try layer or wet blending.
Yeah, use Flesh Wash to shade bleached bone... Don't use pure Skull White as the highlight though... That doesn't work well with Bleached Bone... Use a mix of Bleached Bone and Skull White...
Also, might I recommend that you use Vermin Brown as the base colour and highlight (not drybrush) with Bleached Bone before shading with Flesh Wash...
Just a thought...
White is the hardest colour to highlight and lowlight properly. It takes a lot of practice, so use a practice model first.

Well all i have is scorched brown in the way of brown colors and only have bronzed flesh in the way of flesh colors. For the bleach bone - skull white highlight what would be a good ratio for the highlight color.
Try using a "light" brown shade... maybe something like bubonic brown or graveyard earth, and add progressivly lighter colours on to that.
Other colours that could be used to achieve the final stage would be bleached bone and skull white... just mix the colours you feel like using until you achieve your ideal colour shade.
Ofcourse if you want a finish with another colour that brown, white and so on you just have to use the corresponding colours.
