Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted here.
So, I've been perusing through some of the Apocolypse stuff, and as a Dark Eldar player I was very disappointed to know that there are all of two new models to choose from (and I think of it as one, since they both look and function almost exactly alike). Meanwhile, everyone else has their standard superheavies that can stand up to the battle of attrition that Apocolypse it supposed to be. So I decided I want to take a stab at modelling a titan-esque unit for the Dark Eldar, just for the sake of variety, and to give them something bigger than paper-mached armored raiders to buzz around the field with.
The idea I had in mind is supposed to go along with the DE's desire to capture and enslave their enemies, but brought to a much grander scale, say something they could bring to a seige or a hive city to get mass amounts of slaves instead of what each individual can carry back. What I wanted for the model was something like the tripods in War of the Worlds; something with a main body with a hole in top (or on the bottom), with several segmented tentacles that it uses both for locomotion and attacking enemies.
So far, I've been having trouble finding raw materials to build it out of, since the DE look is something very hard to replicate. The only thing I have so far is this toy: http://s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/w...dku9Detail.jpg
which I got cheap and decided to take apart to see if any interesting parts could be salvaged for modelling. Unfortunately, the thing in general seems unweildy to work with, and the big black part on the bottom is also part of the entire bottom half of it. On top of that, it isn't quite big enough on its own to justify a superheavy with only minor additions.
I was thinking of maybe trying to make something out of platicard, but that only brings up more problems, like figuring out how to glue bent and curved pieces together for the general 'swoopiness' and pointyness DE models have, as well as cutting out parts consistently enough to use them as the tentacle segments.
Does anyone have any helpful suggestions? Perhaps parts or toys I could use to make this model from?
Thing is, dark eldar mostly use warp portals to invade and attack. Titans are far far far too large to fit. But I suppose they could have some multi part titan which comes throught the portal in bits and then gets assembled. I always envisoned a titan simalar to the eldar one but made up of ravanger like craft.
Your plan sounds great, however tentacles don't sound very Dark Eldary, nets or harpoon guns sound better.
You could get bronze pipning to make the legs, that would be sturdy.
Or what about putting a harvester like thing under it. Like a combine harvester but instead of chopping wheat it sucks in fleeing tropps and puts them in cages on it back as a sort of defensive, after all, who'd fire on their own troops? (hmm maybe that plan wouldn't work... IG "kill the cowards who fled" Tau "its for the greater good", etc.'
Still, I want to make something bigger than a ravager for the DE, even if it only partly makes sense. And while tentacles aren't a very big feature on other DE models, they seemed most appropriate. The idea is that they pluck individual soldiers off the ground and stuff them into the hole, never to be seen again (if victory points mattered, I was thinking such models would count for double under the captured rules, since they're mostly unharmed by this process). Also, the tentacles could be used for tearing open vehicles and getting to the crew inside.
Not to mention it's a heck of a lot easier to set a model on the table that actually is supposed to move along the ground, instead of giving it a two foot high base to represent it flying.
Hey, I like the idea. Why not try and make it a little Talos-esque to make it look more like it belongs. Imagine a giant Talos scooping up enemy troops and throwing them in cages on its back........ *drools*
EDITED so that it made sense

I was poking around a little more and found this: http://cdecas.free.fr/robots/images/gundam0.jpg
The model's arms is pretty much what I'm imagining for the tentacles, and the hands at the end could work too. But then that leaves me with the conundrum of what to do with the whole rest of it. Does anyone know some kind of toy/model that has limbs like this in greater numbers?
