well for my chaos sorceror i wanted to make a familiar, so i looked in my bits box to find some chaos mutations and a space marine body. so i thought that if i made him with just mutations to represent his parts and say that he fell to the power of the warp and mutated suddenly! it would fit in with my army background because i have fallen space marines in my army!
people have said a familiar can be anything, maybe its a sickly looking peasant from a raided world or a possesed inanimate object, it can be anything, and the possibilities for neat conversions are endless, if i made one i would personally make it a small weird looking creature, maybe a grot as a base for the model

heh heh heh grots are cool. A familar is usually a small animal, like Chad said it can be anything but mainly something small. Try Reaper Minature Familar packs. They sell them at most model stores. You could always make a Space Marine head with wings. Now that would be cool!...
Fear The Wrath Of The ANZAC Clan
you could use that little guy who holds the helmet for the dark angels master, and take off the helmet, cuase he looks like a little freaky familiar thing.
Back from a long adventure.
