A couple of quick questions.
1) How would you go about painting scorch/reentry marks on a drop pod ?
2) I know black looks best with extreme edge highlighting and bright colors such as yellows and reds I use washes and layering. How do I go about reconciling those two different techniques to look cohesive on the same model ? For example, Scythes of the Emperor or Marines Exemplar.
Drop pod: I'ld drybrush on black/dark brown where the scorches would naturally form.
I'm not totally sure what you mean for the second point but I like to do a base coat, highlight the edges and shade near the edges; which I blend back into the field.
Up, up and away!
How I do Scorch marks; albeit on a smaller scale for flamers; is Black, followed by a Dark Brown (Scorched Brown and Dark Flesh work well) then highlight the edges very lightly with Chainmail before given a wash with
Tamiya Inkmokey. Very similar to Walex actually
Baldrick, you wouldn't see a subtle plan if it painted itself purple and danced naked on top of a Harpsichord sining "Subtle plans are here again!"
I disagree strongly about black being best highlighted with 'extreme' or edging.
I think it looks significantly better layered, just like any other colour (compared to edging, that is).
As far as making black and a colour work together, the best way (from my experience) is to settle on a 'style' of highlighting, and try and make that work on both colours.
For instance, if you are painting your other colour using washes, the best way to get the black to work would be to start with a medium-dark grey (codex, or adeptus battle grey, for instance), and wash it with very thin black paint a few times.
