Welcome to Librarium Online!
Yes I know its been argued back and forth, both sides getting quite huffy and in a few cases bloodied noses....... but here goes.
Im looking at sratchbuilding some kind of Tau Walker titan.
Ok so Ive been arguing this back and forth with a few of my gaming buddies. One just quotes that Xenos filth could never match the might of the Machine God or the Emperors Divine light yada yada...... W-D-L vs him is 3-2-3 btw. Another mate goes with the standard 'Mantas Barracuda Orca' - Your titans are airborne dropships qq more later theory.
Full credit to Wargamer over on tau online for the inspiration in this.
+++ XENOS TRANSMISSION +++ Intercept
During engagements with the Gue'vesa during the Third Sphere Expansion (/Damocles Crusade) the Tau encountered Titan weaponry. In our first encounter we deployed Barracuda and tigershark fighters against the threat, but met heavy Imperial air resistance screening the Titan and were not successful in engaging the enemy. In a subsequent engagement shoals of Hammerhead Tanks engaged and eventually destroyed one of these behemoths, but at great cost.( http://www.tauonline.org/Article/170/TitanHunters/ ).
To date engagement from the Air Caster has proved to be the most succesful method of combatting the Titan threat. However in several engagements atmospheric condtions over the battlefield have prevented the deployment of Air Superiority Fighters, and current ground equipment not up to standard to effectively combat these behemoths.
Therefore the Ethereal Caste has authorised the Earthen Caste to design a method of combating the Titan Threat should it be encountered again and we are unable to deploy the Air Caste in support of the Fire Caste.
+++ END TRANSMISSION +++
So thats my justification, although I will be imparting some general restriction on my design.
1. Walker/Jump infantry - Like the XV88 Broadside, which sacrifices a lot of its manouverability for fire support, I believe a Tau titan should at least have legs for support and stability while firing <insert godmode railgun here> . That said tau doctrines are all about mobile offence/defence, so employing skimmer/antigrav tech for mobility is the go. Albeit in a limited capcity like the Broadside
2. Weaponry - Not sure where to go here. I mean its easy to just super size Railguns and SMS's, Plasma rifles etc, but should I use stats from tau flyers or superimpose stats from a warhound?
3. Size - The warhounds and reavers just exude death. Tau tech v imperial tech leads me to think my tau titan should be slightly smaller to on par with warhound for size but sleeker and streamlined.
Thoughts and criticism welcome.
You could make it kinda quick and agile like the Eldar Titans, lending it an "Mega-XV-8" feel.
I would suggest giving it an Heavy Railgun like the big fliers have, and then maybe a "plasma gun" of some sort, maybe a toned down version of the Plasma Blastgun from the Warhound. Then maybe some missile pods or long barreled burst cannons as defensive weaponry.
You could tone down the armor and give it a handful of void shields, or you could say screw the shields for a "Titan Holo-field, giving an Inv save like the eldar titans.
You definitely need "jump movement".

i would agree that a good place to look ould be the forgeworld rules for the eldar titans, as they are quite agile and killy, yet not big and in you face like imperial ones. Stay away from close combat weapons, as yhey just don't seem right, but i reckon you could invent a new type of tau weapon, just as there are many Titan weapons that aren't availble for normal iperial units.
Personally though, I stll would go with something like the eldar super skimmers, as they just seem more tau like...
Well if your going for the really big XV-88 then you should give it a XV distinction but the number for it should be in the upper hundreds or mid thousands, like XV-532 or XV-4453. You could give it legs then show the legs have anti-grave, like it has pads on the bottom of the feet. I know it's odd but if you want go check out some anime you can get some good ideas on battle suits i can't think of any good ones to suggest right now. You could also go for the star wars AT-AT and give it four legs, Or Like OH hay Ghost in the shell good anime the Movie is awesome but the TV show sucks, but on the TV show they have these drone/tank things that have 4 or 6 legs but they do the anti-grave thing I said above.
If you do things right people wont be sure if you have done anything at all.
Thanks for the ideas and comments. Browsing today Ive seen some people have already attempted this - best so far was a Madcat from Mechwarrior with a 'Fish kitbashed onto the front.
@Zabien - Tachikiomas from ghost in the shell? Blue spider things, big pod on the back IIRC. Not bad but the idea Im fond of the most at the moment (waits for criticism from all round) is loosely based on a Veritech Fighter from macross in gerwalk mode.
Not a good pic I know, if it gets edited link is http://y-wing.net:8080/mechbay/airmech.jpg
Was toying with flattening the front more like a Tigersharks, with the legs slightly more forward to insert vectored thrusters at rear and underside. Whack a few giga rail and plasma rifles on there and see how we go
With regards to weapons, thinking I might use Barracuda and Tigershark variants. Reasoning is I think scaling wise Warhound wpns - Reaver wpns should be equivalent of Tau Titan/Fighters wpns - Manata wpns.
Since the tau are so keen on adding alien race's to thier empire maybe you could go the bio-titan route and create some lumbering giant aliens for them? Just use the counts as rule to make tech versions of the bio weapons. Or maybe some lost clan of kroot come back fricking huge, some mega-krootox king kong wannabe?
When I think "Tau Titan" I think a larger version of a Gundam. Perhaps you could tweak one of the already existing Gundam models and put something like giant railguns on the shoulders or maybe give it a two handed plasman gun.
Lets keep it friendl guys, this is about modeling, im sure he just ment to put the win lose draws against eachoter to show he was only jokeing and not bein biasd with his comment.
I think the gundam idea is cool although give it a more tau feel to it, tu battlesuites seem to have a smooth rectangular thing going on.
PROUD TO BE IN THE BRITISH ARMY.

If the tau were to make a walker, I would imagine it being very different to Gundam (no offence). Giant arms are pretty useless, as all you can do with them is pound the floor - which is what feet are for, and tau aren't very fond of the whole "lets hit things with body parts" thing. I'd probably go for a four legged artillery piece, as a bipedal gun machine is pretty ridiculous if you think of recoil etc - unless it was crisis-suit like in appearance and use, with lots of plasma rifles or something. Also (sorry) I really don't see the point in a half-plane, half-walker hybrid for tau. They'd probably just stick a jumppack on it or something, or have it carried by one of their many manta ships.
Anyway, good luck!
