Im working on an idea for a space marine chapter that has a leader riding a dragon, i think it would be a fun conversion and a cool centerpeice for the army... now all i need is a dragon for him to ride. I dont really like the GW dragons, they are kinda weird looking IMO, and I absolutely love the forgeworld dragon, but it is large so i would like to look at other options before buying something so expensive and gigantic. I have found the ultraforge dragon as well as a few others and havnt liked them so i was just looking for links to websites that might sell dragons.
Also if I did end up getting the forgeworld one, it would only come out for apocalypse battles probably as with the new LOS rules it would be a huge target, but how would I haave my commander riding it? I am debating between having him ride it by converting a saddle for him, probably close to the base of its neck, or constructing come kind of small platform/howdah for him to stand on, though this may be too much work and not look as good as a saddle.
If i did make a saddle, are they harde to make? i suppose i could try sculpting one out of greenstuff but i am no expert at sculpting and have only used greenstuf for minor conversions before.
any help or ideas apreciated. thanks.
I can see why you don't like the GW ones but have you looked into the new High Elves plastic set. It's small enough that you won't get too much of a disadvantage and it's plastic so it'll easily modify to fit your chapters iconography with little work.

I have not... I knew it existed because I read WD, but I dont pay much attention to high elves cuz noone i know plays them and i assumed their dragon was the same as the others (ie metal and annoying).
At first I did not like the high elf dragons, but they seem to have grown on me, and I like em... one question is about those saddles, are they built into the dragon's back or is part of the rider's torso built into them or what, just wondering what kind of work i would have to do to get a space marine on there.
Also does anyone have any ideas on how i should convert marines to be riding the new dark elf cold ones? i would prefer for it not to be obscenely expensive as i am going to need roughly 30 of these things. I think the normal tac marine legs with the wide stance can prolly be slightly converted to liik like they are in a riding position, so the problem would be getting a ton of that type of leg...
You may want to make it a CSM army. It doesn't seem to fluffy to have a Chapter Master riding around on some xenos race....though I guess it is plausible.
I suggest using the biker legs and GSing in some armor or pads/filing the legs if they dont fit properly.
Better yet, make an Eldar Exodite army. It does seem unfluffy to me to have Marines riding around on Grox (Cold Ones in 40k) and a larger cousin.
I unfortunately do not have a marine not glued to a base so I can't try one on my dragon to see if it fits for you, but just holding them up together I really don't think you will have too much trouble. At worst you may need to file down the inside of the marines legs a little bit, and possibly GS some robes so they dangle down a bit, the robes on the HE rider are massive.
Bike legs may not work so well since the waist is sitting on them at a weird angle, they wouldn't dangle properly without lots of greenstuff at the waist. Again normal marine legs would probably work on cold ones, they are fairly skinny.
Might I ask what rules are you going to be using to represent the dragon and the cold ones in battles? There isn't really a big mount for marine commanders in the rules, and it would make his base a LOT bigger than it should be. Just interested.
The dragon would be the sammael ravenwing jetbike guy, from the DA codex. His jetbike is not as large as a dragon, but it IS bigger than a bike, and this is not going to be an insanely competitive army, just a fun conversion project that will look cool. My friends will be fine with it, and most of the people at my local GW will be as well, especially as it being big will help them with the new LOS rules. O and the cold ones are bikes.
I disagree that it would be unfluffy for my marines to be riding these lizards, i have yet to come up with what i will be calling them in my fluff, but they will not be grox If you would like to see the justification for them it is in the fluff section entitled "The Knights Prometheus", and I am writing up fluff and a backstory to go with it.
Also i hate eldar
