I use a chaos black basecoat with mithril silver on top (with chainmail highlighting) for mine. Makes the silver look much brighter and metallic. The red on their shoulderpads is also turned to a maroon because of the undercoat, which complements the silver well.

I'm far more interested in what shade of red to use. The only one I've got at the moment is Blood red, and I've had poor results with that earlier.
Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

I usually prime in white then basecoat in Space Wolves grey. After which, I black line and then paint chainmail. The trick is to lay down vary thin coats of chainmail until you are satisfied.
If Wolves were meant to fly, wouldn’t the Emperor have given them wings?

I basecoat with Chaos Black the do as the codex says and go for Boltgun Metal with mithril silver highlights, works quite well for me

tbh, i thought Scab Red looked queer and it does, but undercoat the shoulder pads (only the right one for me) with a darkened blood red then apply 3 or four thin coats of scab red and they look ok actually, the purity seals are just scorched brown then scab red and the blood red in a TINY highlight on top is essential.

didnt realise what a difference a small amount of blood red made

Good luck and post some pictures!
    Thanx.
    Ash.

I'm sure you could get a better effect by switching the highlight and base coat, i.e. chainmail basecoat with mithril highlights.
