Hey hey all!
Just started to paint up my ISTs for my =][= and IG army in a black and red colour scheme. I just feel that theres something missing. Then it stuck me as a fun idea to include the British flag onto the shoulders of the models and on the company banners. Going along with this theme, i found my family crest and its rather cool (red shield with 3 white lions and a yellow star).
In hoping to give it a more regimental feel (cant resist the idea of Sharp in space ) like the armys around the 19 Century.
Just wanted to ask if anyone has any ideas of how to paint complicated flags on a small basis or even where to paint this on the model. Also id like to know if this idea is ok in general (one lad got booted from our gaming club because he came in with swastikas painted on his guard) i dont want to get booted if its deemed 'un PC'.
I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand
Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.
I think Swastikas, and family crests are two different things completely. I don't see why you would have any problems with the Union Jack, or your family crest.
In terms of getting it onto your models, I think I steady hand would be...handy! I think you can buy transfer paper from somewhere, it might be worth looking into that, and printing your crest onto that then transfering it onto your models...
Fighting Pirannha Graphics produce a lot of custom decals. They started with just Battletech factions (which would work pretty well for 40K armies) but have, and still are, expanding their range. Worth looking at

I remember seeing a guy on another forum who did a Space Marine army up with the Union Jack on everything. It looked cool, but for my money, I don't like seeing present-day iconography on something that's supposed to be 40,000 years into Earth's future, way beyond a time which the British Empire, not to mention every other nation we've heard of, has ceased to exist.
But that's my problem, not yours, and I'd never refuse to play you over that. I also don't think the British flag is un-PC since to my knowledge the British government hasn't murdered millions of people in death camps, at least not in the past 100 years, so you're unlikely to find any survivors/survivors' family members who will get irate with you. In short, putting a swastika on your soldiers is asking for it. The British flag is not.
They could be descended from an Imperial Guard regiment like drawn from Terra, and maybe have an earliest Battle Honour of the Land of Inge, much like the earliest battle honour for the Imperial Fists is Roma....
Alternatively, it is possible that a fleet from Earth during the earliest expansion of man had a British command crew or simialr, and set up a colony on a planet with the Union jack as their principal flag? Given that most worlds like this were seperated from the rest of humanity for generations, they may only have been rediscovered during the Golden Age, or even more likely, during the Crusade. As a result, they may have either stagnated their development, or else regressed to a pre-Victorian society...
Maybe the Inquisitor comes from the same planet, and likes to drink tea and have scones at 4 p.m?
I don;t see why it is unfeasible, after all the Praetorians blatantly based their uniforms upon the colonial era British redcoats and shakos.....
