Hey everyone, I'm currently studying in Ireland and just bought a box of Ork Boyz to go with the AoBR set i'll get when home. Anyways I was curious if anyone has any idea of cheap paints I could get rather than paying the exorbitant amount asked for the GW stuff. I'm thinking the kind of craft paints you get at a craft store for relatively low prices... Does anyone know the kinda store to find these things at perhaps? Thanks in advance!
I live up in the north but things may be fairly similar. I'm not sure where you can get cheap paints but I think there are a few places you can get good ones. I often go to Brabury graphics for paints and inks where I live. The winsor and newton inks are very good. Most paints if not all paints will be imported into Ireland so they will cost money. You can also poke about and look for smaller hobby shops and so on. These places usually sell paints and they may be cheaper. Though GW paints aren't insane in cost and they should last you a while. If you don't want to buy loads of paints try to mix them from time to time, this can give you more colours to work with.
yeah maybe... I just want to keep prices to a minimum and for Orks I don't know what colors to get... Black for basecoat, Green for skin, Boltgun Metal for the guns and other metal bitz but i feel that i should get something else... anyone have a clue about how Orks look with just black clothing?
I think if you give Orks black clothes you will get a very bright effect in the green. The green will basically glow beisde the black because the black is so dark.
yeah i'm kinda worried about that... i think i'll pick up those 3 paints tomorrow and if i need to i'll go back later to get something else...
Scorched and Bestial browns are great for any generic leather areas. Definitely a good buy for Orks.
White (or maybe the Dheneb Stone foundation paint) is also handy if you want to do the white and black checked patterns often found on Orks. Red, Blue, Orange and other brighter colours are useful for painting accent pieces and clan markings - a bit of a brighter colour on a bit of armour or gear can add a lot of visual interest to a model.
Check out GW's guide to Ork clan markings, their basic Ork painting guide, and of course the articles on Black Reach, including the HQ masterclass. There ought to be plenty of colour scheme ideas lurking in there to get you started.
It depends on where you are in Ireland? GW is probably the most available of the miniature paints but there are places stocking Vallejo and P3 paints as well. W&N inks are great and readily available but craft and art acrylics are either too much work or give very poor coverage. If you're in Dublin try The Model Shop on Capel St, Mark's Models on Hawkins St, or Models Inc on Upper Dorset Street. Failing that there are some great online stores selling Vallejo paints.
I'm actually in Galway... its kinda tough to find stuff other than GW/model paints but I was hoping for something cheaper... Even if it's not great quality because I'll probably just repaint everything when i get stateside and such...
Ah. So am I. The only place currently selling miniatures in Galway is Modelworld. Pete stocks the GW paints, Army Painter primers and dips. Sadly Jim closed Gamers Relam a few months back, he had a great stock of Vallejo paints. You can get the standard artists stuff in Easons or Powells, noth on Shop St, but you will spend a lot of time thinning them down and may not like the results. Cheap craft paints can have very poor coverage, I only use them for terrain.
If you're in the University look out for the Fantasy and Science fiction Society meetings. You'lll find plenty of like minded gamers there. There is nothing wrong with the GW paints, and if all you're painting is Orks you won't need a large selection. Boltgun, a red, a brown, a green, maybe two, black, and maybe some devlan mud as a wash. €20 or there abouts.
Cool, you at the University currently Grayson?
