Welcome to Librarium Online!
The title pretty much says it all. I am considering getting some for a project and I was hoping for some advice on where to look, and what size I should be looking at.
There are some 6mm x 1.5mm ones on Ebay from the US going pretty cheap, but I didn't know if these would be too big.
I've seen some others on sale in the UK on various sites but they seem to be much more costly, 5 3mm x 1mm ones seem to cost the same as 50 of the 6mm x 1.5mm ones do from the US seller!
I'm not really looking at using them on infantry models, probably only vehicles, so the larger ones may be alright, but I was looking for advice from the modellers of LO!
I keep buying magnets from Supermagnete.de (link), which is a German site.
Shipping costs to Italy are very reasonable (6.50€ for orders over 15€) so I guess they will be fine for UK orders as well, they have an excellent service even for small orders (they always gave me a small gift together with the package), fast shipping and you can pay with Paypal.
Their prices are very reasonable IMO: 0.20€ to 0.14, depending on the quantity, for small magnets (diameter 3mm, thickness 1mm, good to swap arms on models), and 0.28€ to 0.15€ for bigger ones (diameter 5mm, thickness 2 mm, good for vehicles and bigger models).
Hope this helps!
I only use RE magnets on my Tau battlesuits and Seeker Missiles, but there is a UK supplier called Power Magnets which can be found at: PowerMagnetStore .com - Suppliers of NdFeB , Neodymium , Neo , NIB , rare earth magnets and magnetic accessories
These are priced "per magnet", with price bands varying with the number ordered. The "D" is the diameter measurement.
A friend of mine has used this site, so I have just texted him to get his opinion. His comments, received this minute, are as follows:
"Very excellent deal and fast delivery"
"Tau Commandment #226: Participants who use Velocity Trackers in the Tau Clay Pigeon Tournament will be disqualified"
Thanks for the help guys. I actually became impatient this morning so bought some from ebay.
100 Neodymium Magnets 1/8" x 1/16 " Disk N42 Rare Earth on eBay, also Magnets, Fasteners Hardware, Industrial Supply MRO, Business Industrial (end time 02-Oct-08 11:48:37 BST)
They don't seem too bad, but in future I think try PowerMagnetStore.
I'll try to remember to update the thread once I've received them, here's hoping I get a good result!
Again, thanks to all for the help
Update: I have received them and they seem to be spot on, just the ticket for what I need and easy as hell to put in.
The trouble I'm having now is finding suitably sized (i.e. small strips of) magnetically-responsive metal to use as the "other-side" for a couple of projects. If only drinks cans were still aluminium!
I'm thinking of cutting up trying tin cans, or more specifically the lids... elastoplasts on standby!
That would usually be my plan, however in this case the opposite sides are the gun mounts of a vulture... and if I started drilling them they would just fall to bits - there's nowhere to fit the magnet "in".
The ones I bought would be great for Marine arms, as for dreads, probably the same but use a few of them to anchor it properly.
