I have always wanted to see a mounted SM Captain, so this guy is being worked into the fluff for my new SM army. In short, the backstory is a SM Patrol crash lands on a desert planet and must fend for themselves out of touch with the rest of the imperium. I think of the mounted Captain as a SM "Prospector".
First, here are the bits laid out before assembly.
WHFB Pegasus w/o wings.
Rough Riders Legs.
SM EMperor's champion sword arm.
Assorted SM / IG bits for his gear.
*The dog is a wood elf hunting dog, but he didn't make it into the final mod.
Here is the mount with the cargo modeled and the base underway. The spikes are going to be "rare minerals" that may have been discovered on this planet.
Skip ahead a few steps and here is most of the mount painted and the Captains torso well under way.
Final pick so far, still some painting to do but I think you can see where I am going with it.
Thanks for looking.
Here is a more recent pic with the reins modeled and his backpack painted / attached.
Lots of good ideas floating around in here, and I'd love to take this further and give him a Command Group on horseback as well.....but that's after I finish the 1500 pt list I have in mind.

Wow! i'm really impressed, great conversion, even better paintjob!
Poor horse though, lugging all that marine around
REP, BIG TIME.
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

The Dutch Legion
That is lovely. The pegasus makes a suitable scaled horse, though I would be tempted to go bigger still and possibly use the vintage marauder unicorn, or perhaps Korhandir/Malhandir or Wysorach

meh... you did it really really well (so i'm not picking on your painting/modelling finesse) but how on earth could a horse lug around a Space Marine, fluff-wise?
but i have also been toying with such an idea, and have come to the conclusion of space marine scouts on horses, because when infiltrating for long periods of time, a bike'll run out of fuel, whereas a horse won't. and a horse would be able to carry a scout.
but i guess you could just say the planet which they crash-landed was home to incredibly tough and massive (30 hands or so) war horses.
but other than my blatant pickiness, a very well presented, painted and modelled model. care to post more of your Combat Patrol?
PS why a square base?
Beautiful paintjob there, and an awesome concept and execution. As for the horses carrying marines, there have been instances where horses have been cybernetically enhanced to boost performance, perhaps someone amongst the marines has tinkered with them?
Iron Swords 3rd Company - We are the swords which reap the bodies of our foes.
Train of thought will be terminating at.. edible murder weapons!
Dear All Concerned,
Although I too believe that a normal horse could not carry a space marine, the conversion and painting are too good to complain! Amazing job with the project here, and I love the saddle, very nice conversion!
Now that I look at it again, it looks like he has no pupils...

First when I read the tred I was like "oh dear god", now that I see it that actualy pretty awsome. Realy nice painting too. Wouldn't the weight of power armor break the horses back though? Might have been cool to make the joints like it's a robot kinda. All and all it looks realy good though.
Tomb Kings, Marines, Eldar
I share a lot of the thoughts here...
I read the title and thought WTF!!! Alas never judge a thread by its title :-p
To be fair, you've executed it brilliantly! Some pupils would finish it off nicely, otherwise it's a sweet sweet job and an ace conversion - job well done!!
