basing models that are allready painted

So, ive run into a little problem that i was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas on. So i've got my orks all painted up, yet i never did anything with the base, If i wanted to put down some sand or gravel, and get it looking nice, what would be the best way of going about it?

Oh.. but i dont look so good with all those.. tentaclly things..

Squeeze out a glob of glue on another surface (palette, post-it note, whatever), then carefully spread it on the base with a cheap brush or a toothpick. Try to get right up to the edges of the feet, without slopping it on the model if at all possible. Lay down your sand or other basing material, let it dry, then very carefully paint the groundwork.

Be prepared to make some minor touch ups on the feet and legs, just in case.
We've got plenty of youth... How about a fountain of smart?
