What varnish do You use over metallics?
I find that a matt varnish reduces the shine of the metal and makes it dull (no surprise), on the verge to plain grey... Using a gloss varnish on the other hand makes it look all wet and shiny. I want a varnish that keeps the paints original finish, just protected by a layer of clear varnish...
Currently painting the Waaagh! of Warboss Borboss - Goff and Evil Sunz warband
I personally like the lack of shine with a flat varnish but I guess that is personal taste. I don't think it makes it look non-metallic it just cuts the reflection of light.
I am guessing this would be a personal choice as you have pretty much summed up what varnish effects have on the miniature... The more flat the less reflection, the glossier it is the more reflection you will get. Satin is right there in the middle...
Most people on here use other brands alongside or instead of GW products, not sure if there's a reccomendation thread around though. The GW spray apparently was a good middle ground, but have never used it myself and have not noticed if I've seen someone else with it specifically.
I don't know what brands they have in Sweden but Krylon is pretty good. I would visit your local art supply store if you have one... or look online barring that...
