I am wondering about varnishing techniques and rather that doing the trial and error method on countless test subjects i ask for advice here. How do you get varnish to protect from chipping and at the same time not get the really shinig effect...

Whack it on after the varnish (has dried), and BAM, the matt finish you were looking for.
