Hi guys, I need some advice.
Obviously painting skull white straight onto darker colours isn't exactly going to work well, so what are the best layers to put on top of the darker colours before applying white?
GW Foundation paints will cover black in one or two coats and the lighter ones can then have white built up on top of them in only 3-4 layers. Which one to use depends on the main color of the rest of the piece. Astronomicon Grey for blue, Iyanden Darksun for Yellow, Macharius Solar Orange for Reds probably. You should generally avoid ever painting skull white straight onto anything except as the absolute final highest highlight. Start with 50:50 bleached bone: skull white with the tiniest brush tip of your base coat color in it, and go from there.
I would do the grey foundation paint followed with a lite black ink wash (new ones) following again with the fortress grey. Then finish with 50/50 white and the fortress grey paint. good luck.
