Primer Selection - Black, White or Grey?

I was hoping some of the more experienced (or at-all experienced) painters out there could help explain when the different primer colours are used? Everywhere I look it is just stated to used the primer colour 'as required', and I can't decide what that means exactly.

(I'm also colourblind... so that may add to the problem just a tad)

Are there any rules-of thumb in selecting the primer colour?

    ----------------

    NOTE:
I tend to use greens on most of my models (Dark Angels, Tyranids, Orcs & Goblins), and because of that whole colourblind deal, I tend to prefer tones that are fairly... bold and stand-out (Catachan Green over Dark Angels... because the latter looks like black to me).

    Black:
    • used for darker colours
    • good drybrushing results
    • easiest for new painters because mistakes aren't as visable
    White:
    • Used for lighter colours(except white usaually)
    • easiest for light colours
    • Foundation paints kinda made white obsolete except for washes (eg devlan mud over white = well shaded graveyard earth colour.)
    Gray:
    • best to paint white over
    • Gives smooth results
    • I use it because it's cheaper than GW's paints. Dont use rough coat though. Lol. Rock men.
For you I'd reccoment black IMHO.

Thanks Quo Man. That was a perfect breakdown, exactly what I was looking for.

I'd started working with black... was never sure how the other primers would stack up against it. Now I don't need to worry so much.
