Well, folks, thus far my experience with conversions has been on the order of things like this:
- Drill a hole into a model's hand and run a banner pole through.
- Kitbash a chimera and a whirlwind to make a basilisk.
- Glue different choppy bits together to make new styles of power weapon from my Marines
- Greenstuff some sandbags and fill in large gaps in models
Now I want to make something REALLY converted and I have just the project for it.
I want to make a loyalist Imperial force based on using teleporters to do interdictions. Something along the lines of an Inquisitorial assault force or maybe a Rogue Trader who got his hands on some nifty archotech.
The list I'm going to use will be based on a Tzeentch Daemon list. The easy part is the horrors. They are going to be regular Guard Infantry, probably with just fancy paint to make them look like they travel the warp a lot.
The tough part is that I want three Soulgrinders for this list. Now a lot of folks have been doing Epic-style Knights out of Defiler kits, but that isn't quite what I want. The should be something along the lines of a Sentinel on Steroids.
I've been basing my brains about trying to come up with concepts and part of my dilemma is whether I will ever enter a tournament with this army. The answer is probably ... not. This opens up some possibilities since I might be using non-GW parts. We shall see.
Here is a concept I've been working on. I'm not entirely thrilled, but at least I can use it to gage proportions.
Sentinel Cockpit on top and an earthshaker arm on a Bionicle:
Obviously it has a ways to go. Imperial tech is way more blocky.

Well, if it were me, I'd go for the standard open cockpit Sentinel than the closed Cadian for the head, since for a thing that size the pilot would be better off having as good of a view as possible. (Yes, there's nothing to prevent that pilot from getting pinged by all sorts of nasty things, but it's treason to think that a guardsman isn't expendable.
Maybe try cutting into the torso itself to sink the head in deeper? Since it seems to be an overall theme for the Emperor's forces to avoid showing necks.
But those are probably just silly thoughts~ good luck. ^^
No, no, no. Mixing lego and 40K is HERESY! I think it looks messed up and sacreligious and I...
... I can't back that up. I love lego and don't like seeing it messed with, but you have the beginnings of a great conversion/scratchbuild there.
Suggestions: you are right (IMHO) that Imperial machines are bulky and blocky. I think you should add as much armour/plating/flat bits as you think right. Two reasons - to hide the lego origins, and to show thick armour plating (lots of rivets if you have the patience). It doesn't have to go all the way around, in fact leaving some gaps to show the interior structure would also be cool. If you have any piping or small tubes and wires, put them in to represent power cables and ammunition feeds.
Good luck with the conversion and keep showing us pics of your work!
Zapp: You see the killbots have a preset kill limit. Knowing their weakness, I sent wave after wave of my own men at them until they reached their limit and shut down.
That looks really cool. As a former lego maniac i think that mixing legos and 40K is sorta odd but with some covering up i think its gonna look freaking awsome!
FOR PIE AND THE IMPERIUM! (in that order)
I agree that Imperial Machines don't generally have necks. That cockpit is going to move down on the carapace somehow.
The problem I'm htting is that since the bionicle is so skinny, I'm going to end up building it up so much that I might as well use a Defiler. Granted, that is a $30 increase in price, but it will also be tourney-legal that way as well.
I'm actually interesting in seeing how this turns out :p I'm seriously considering doing both, as in, do a simple conversion of a Bionicle for a fun version and do a defiler kitbash for the "real" version.
I love the look of it. It's a great concept to keep working on, must get me one of theese. Not that I'd steal your idea...noooo. Maybe...borrow? Become inspired by?
I agree on putting the head a bit further down and bulking it out. But I also like to see the earthshaker get moved a bick further back. As it is now it's like countinuing the arm from the elbow. (Is there any other way? ) But I think it might look a bit unbalanced. IMHO it would look more realistic if it had the join say where the pipe begins and keep the bulky part behind the elbow.
If you decide to kitbash a Defiler, and I warmly recommend it -it's great fun and a very educational project, I see some pieces in the bionicleset youu better make use of. The feets look splendid.
Oh, and another thing just poped into my mind, wouldn't it be more guard-esque if it had two ranged weapons for arms?
Hmm... the second arm could be used for reloading the cannon though, seeing how basilisk cannons don't exactly come with an autoloader... that, or have a strapped in guardsman on the right arm as well as the loader. :p
Now hold still. This is going to hurt me more than it is going to hurt you. Just relax and you'll be fine!
Yeah, the Bionicle thing just isn't looking good next to my Steel Legion. So the Bionicle Knightling is out. Time to get to work on my first Defiler kitbash. I feel like I'm jumping out of a perfectly good airplane...
I'll be subscribing to this! Looking forward to seeing what you can form from a Defiler!...
I like the sound of your plans for the force, should be pretty cool when it's done!
I'm not really the one who likes to honk my own horn. But I'm not sure if you've seen my WIP (yes, it's still WIP) Defiler/Titan. I am quite pleased with some of the things I've done to it and I think it has in some ways captured the Titan-esque look better than some other two-legged Defilers. So try to find it if you want
