Hooray painting ADD! I've gone round and round on different Tyranid schemes. I have found one that I think I like, and would like some feedback. The pics aren't perfect, and the model is not done being highlighted, but what I am after is a general impression. Does it need more contrast? What suggestions do people have for the gaps in the exoskeleton where the sinewy bits show through? Should claws/talons be the same color, or should I find some kind of gray?
One of my goals is to avoid much black if I can. Black does not occur naturally in nature terribly often, and I want some more naturalistic looking nids as opposed to the GW extreme contrast stuff. Also, I play Black Templars, and a newly acquired Guard army that I am thinking of doing an Urban theme with, so there will be plenty of black and white going around.
Without further ado, I give you Clarence the Spinegaunt.
Now that I've traded off my Orks, I finally don't have to cringe at the thought of green nids, yay!
My own immediate thoughts are to maybe do the carapace a bit darker, maybe, so that I can do the thin extreme highlights along the "grain" of the carapace in a light color, but I may save that for the big bugs, since it would take a lot of time on Clarence and his buddies.
i´m not a good judge, but i´d say it looks pretty good, though the pic is pretty bad, you need to improve that.
post it with a few better pics so that everyone will be able to see the pics properly
looks pretty good with everything i can see though
Looks like a good start for color choices.. My only criticism would be the apparent flashing left on the rear right leg.
There was a time when I didn't care about flashing on my space marines, but that was back about 8 years ago...
Keep up the work and lets get some finished crisp pictures.
This paint job looks nearly professional. I would have to say your doing well and it looks good.

Hehe. It's hardly professional, but thanks for the feedback. Getting away from the bright, super-contrast nids is definitely something I am aiming for with this scheme. I want to refine the carapace technique so it looks a bit more like actual bony protrusions.
Looks good to me, especially now we can see it with the new photos . The grainy bone effect is well done and is effective at bringing out the texture of the chitin and the skin looks pretty lively aswell. Keeping it down to essentially just the three colours always proves wonders aswell and this is an example of that in effect. About the spinefist, there isn't really much that needs to be done to it. Most tyranid weapons look fine when painted in the same colours as the rest of their body and spinefists are probably the least needy when it comes to a contrasting colour due to how little difference there is between the weapon and a gaunt's normal limb. Only advice I can give is it might be worth adding a little bit of shading to the areas where the carapace joins up to the skin since they blend together slightly too well but apart from that, it's all looking good!
You did a great job there. The colors look like they have some nice depth to them.
