Welcome to Librarium Online!
i bought a stegadon recently (havent put on howdah yet) and began painting him, cause i'm a low level painter and basically want him to look decent, i painted him totally red gore apart from obvious things such as horn, jaw etc.
my problem comes with the scales, i want them to be darker than the flesh which is gore, but not the way its shown on the box. with black scales, i'm going for a kind of dark burgundy colour on him. my attempts at putting scab red over chaos black failed miserably.
if anyone has got ideas on how to achieve this plz respond, money is no object as i just got a pay check, if i need to buy more paints i will. keep in mind that i am a decent but not amazing painter, regards Lewbot.
I usually mix a small dab of black paint with a few drops of water until it is cloudy looking. Then I apply a thin coat onto the red paint and wait till it dries. Repeat until you get the shade you want and then add your highlights.
This can take several coats depending on how much water you use to water down the paint. You can also use brown instead of black if you like, whatever gives you the effect you want. Test it on some spare bits before you try it on your model.
