I'm about to start a bigish project but im on a budget, When I do scenery im pretty good at the architecture but im pretty naff at the detailing of buildings. Stuff like the games workshop ruined walls and things for Cities of Death have lots of columns, and small detailing that I just can't seem to do whenever I do a building. The walls just end up a little plain, and not very "gothic" and 40kish.
I was wondering if anyone had any tips for taking something like a plain, large 4 sided building and adding lots of detail to make it sci-fi gothic ish, but on a budget. Stuff like paper, card, balsa and old sprues I have some of so anything that uses these would be good.
My usual detailing consists of cutting thick card to add corner peices where walls meet, and perhaps adding some unused bits of stuff from vehicle sprues etc to add a bit more but they still end up plain.
Anyone got some good ideas - not just pics but some methods to implement stuff for larget walls would be ace.
P.s My plan is to put up a project thread when I've got stuff done so other people can see what I've done and hopefully learn what im learning!!
Add a window, they make it look less like a box.
Big windows, as mentioned above, can be made on a budget. Make them fancy arched-style and that will add to the look. Dowel isn't that expensive and can be cut up and used as pillars, or as pipes if you want a more industrial look.
Thin card or plasticard can be cut up to provide detail on the walls as well. A simple thing would be to cut an arch shape and add it to the top of the wall near roof - giving the whole wall and arched look, under which you could put some arched windows. This could be applied to doorways as well.
Search the internet, look at picture of fancy buildings. It should give you ideas.
Gothic windows, as said before, with card frames and foamcore ledges look quite nice indeed. And remember, battle damage to fill up empty spaces =D
Marines - All built, 4/5 painted. Tau - 3/4 built, 0 painted. 'crons - 1/2 built, 1/2 painted.
I suck at staying on task.
