I've been reading some of the posts in this very inspiring section of the forums and I'm starting to get an itch to modify units to create very individual ones.
Being an imperial guard player however, any simple conversion to infantry that is to be mass produced will either cause me agony or be one of my greatest achievements. It has occured to me that duplication of various parts may be the ideal way of doing such a thing, but I do understand there are copy write laws prohibiting such actions on GW models, they are works of art after all.
What I do wish to ask it this; how much of a conversion must you make to a model for it to no longer be under said copy write laws? Is this even considered a vaild question?
(please note I intend only to copy converted parts so asto speed up the building process slightly)
If it is for personal use only, depending on your country of origin, then you are usually allowed to reproduce something after purchasing it. Now if you sold / traded those items at any time, you would be breaking the law.
In the main GW generally ignore modellers duplicating items for the sake of modelling. But GW legal will go for you if you sell anything.
Thanks for the quick reply Brother Argos, much appreciated.
another point you might want to consider is if you plan using models in GW stores or tordements. They do have rule son how much a model is made up from GW parts, i think but am not 100% sure that 75% of the model at leats must be made from GW parts to be used at there stores. Dont know if this is any use to you but thought would say incase.

Gedderz comment regarding 75% etc ... is one of the reasons I didn't sculpt my units from scratch. I can also show with pictures its a Cadian trooper at the core with Green Stuff
its 50 as far as I know, and as brother argos said, its perfectly legal if you don't sell/trade them
Im quoting from memory, but I read a post somewhere about a GW staffer saying "Its fine if you cast an extra thunder hammer or two for your terminators, but should you try to sell them, we will go after your grandmother".
Marines - All built, 4/5 painted. Tau - 3/4 built, 0 painted. 'crons - 1/2 built, 1/2 painted.
I suck at staying on task.
