Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've been considering using fine sand on my Warhammer 40K Tau Empire models, but I'm having trouble finding fine sand in small quantities and without having to visit the nearest beach. I don't get much time to work on my models, and lately I've been getting back into building my army, but I'd like to play about with using sand on my models. I reside in the UK, so could anyone point me to an online retailer that sells sand similar to how Games Workshop provide those small stones and grass for bases? Thanks.
Not sure where you would purchase sand online in small quantities, but I would assume you could pick some up at a DYI or gardening place. I've never been shopping for such things on my visits to the UK so I can't say for sure, but I would assume they would sell such things in smaller 'consumer' sizes, not just the comercial type. Barring that, look around for some building/remodeling/construction going on, and see if they'll let you nick a cup full. Really that's all you'd need.
DYI is more than likely your best bet (no idea the store names but I'm sure you're familiar with them in your region).
You can get sand from GW, it's just fairly expensive. There's a good chance that other hobby shops, particularly things like model railway shops might have a similar thing.
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.

I wasn't aware GW sold sand, since my friends said they didn't. I'll have to call them up and ask, even though GW sell that kind of stuff for too much, it's probably the most convenient way of getting a small amount.
Can someone link me to the sand GW sells since I can't find it. I want to see if it's fine sand, since I need something that has very small grains.
You can make fine sand with a pestle and mortar. Just put some average sand in there and grind it up until you have it the way you want it. You can find any kind of sand near a building site. Just ask one of the builders if you can have a few handfuls for a tupperware container. Be friendly and they will probably let you take a bit.
Dumb question, but sand on the base or actually sand on the model? If you want sand for the base, visit your neighborhood playground, late at night when no one will give you funny looks, fill up a tub with sand and then take it home. Make sure it's dry, then sift it through a colandar to get the finer particles.
If you're looking to texture your models, consider a textured spray paint. I use one from Rustoleum on my vehicles and it turns out quite nicely.
I take it you live near a B&Q or a HOMEBASE or some kind of shop like that.
Or you could try the early learning centre, toysrus or wilkinsons. Or just have a walk
around where you live. You will be surprised at what is just lying around on the floor.
I have have found more slate and sand than i will ever use in my life time. Building sites and drive ways are great for stones, slate, sand, peddles.
I AM BOOMER!
I've been considering Homebase and stuff, but I'm assuming they won't sell sand in small packs, but rather in large sacks. As for suggestions about construction sites and playgrounds, these are a good idea but I don't know any locations like that off the top of my head. I'll have to look out for construction sites on my way to work but this is too much hassle. I'm not too into the modelling aspect of Warhammer as I mainly play for the actual gaming, so I don't want to go too out of my way to acquire some sand. That's why I was hoping for some links to small packs of sand online, as this would be the most hassle free process assuming GW doesn't sell them.
