How would one go to paint the Warriors of the Reborn from the Black Library book "Deus Sanguinius"?
For those who haven't read the book, they are basically a group of renegade Blood Angels who have been converted (unknowingly) to Tzeentch, recruited a bunch of civilians, and tried to overthrow Commander Dante. They were aided by the Word Bearers.
I've tried to paint Blood Angels and Word Bearers but I can't get them to look convincing. The colours don't look, well, real.
Could you help?
BTW, I'm thinking of using them as IG or another CSM army.

I think they looked pretty much like blood angels, but their emblem was the spear over the wings. and the 1000 chosen warriors they recruited were as you said pretty much civis with improvised gear. so maybe some converted guard? I could be way off in my recollections though.
Hm, could you clarify what you mean by "not convincing"?
Do you mean the colors just aren't the way they usually look?
Do you layer?
