I'm going to be using a Battlewagon in my Orks army, and there is NOOOOOO way I'am buying the GW one.
I have a leftover Leman Russ from my IG days, unassembled. I was thinking of using that, but add a "cargo area" behind the turret. Basically a box made of plasticard or the like with an open top.
The Russ is useful because the sponsons, hull gun and turret allow me to use a variety of weapons, if I ever change my list. I'm worried that the chassis is to small though and opponents might whine I'm gaining an unfair advantage through cover.
I really don't want to spend the money on a LR or GW Battlewagon. Do you think this would fly, as the plasticard would hang off the back elongating it a bit? If not what's some other ways I could make it bigger or models I could use?
maybe put trukk wheel on this 'box' so it look like it aint just been stuck on and left. Get glyph plate also. there gd fun.

It's not gonna be just glued to the back, it's behind the turret and extends, like a cargo hold. Not like...a wagon pulled by a kid.
I toyed with the idea of taking the front half of a trukk and mounting it to the front of a Russ

My plan (eventually) is to go to TheWarStore.com (no, that's not an ad and I don't work for them) and buy the stripped-down version of the land raider. It's in the marines section of "Battlewagon Bits." For about $20 (US) you get the main hull and tracks. No hatches or weapons, but for an Orky konvershun, you won't need them, especially if you have lots of bits and you're comfortable enough with plasticard to build a box. "Welding" on plates should not be a problem for you.
EDIT: Ok, I lied. It's $24.99. Still a lot cheaper than the full box, or the Ork battlwagon. (Clicky!)
if you dont plan on spending any money (although i must admit 20 bucks is pretty good for most of a land raider) id reccomend trying to use the plasticard to extend the back like you said have it hang off maybe an inch and a half or two just so its around the right size of a battlewagon and if you need any help orkifying it dont hold your breath for this but isnt GW releasing a kit that includes extra options for battlewagons like the deff rolla?
Ask me about the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White Bike!!!
Ah I should've poked around the warstore a bit more, I'm buying every model in my army from them (conversion-fest). A stripped down raider would be perfect!
I'd probably take the front of a Rhino or Chimera chassis, add the track sections from the Russ and the roof to mount the turret, and then have the back section as the Chimera or Rhino passenger compartment at the rear, essentially a chop-shop rhino or Chimera, with teh middle section and tracks of a Leman Russ. You could even put the sponsons on, and still keep the Chimera turret if you'd like.
Maybe short track sections under the smaller transport vehicle sections at the front and back for helping to cross trenches (otherwise it would get suck!)
