With getting 90% of my Orks painted I've been looking into starting some scenery. Insomnia not letting me sleep and Duane's old Mek Shop thread helped spark some ideas. I'm kind of limited on supplies for the time, so before I do any major cutting I was just wondering the average dimensions for 40k buildings. I was thinking 6"x6" or 4"x8" would turn out pretty well proportioned for the majority of the buildings, but just wanted some feedback from others since this is my first project like this. I was thinking of doing a small Ork encampment with maybe 5-6 huts, some guard towers, and maybe some other random orky stuff. Hopefully once it gets under way and I get my camera to work I can get pictures of my progress and my orkies.
Some people think that if you use 6 inches for terrain it will help you measure distances when playing without having to use a ruler. I use 7 inchs as it fits in with my Worldworks road tiles. I also make them random sizes, I like the idea of making ruins etc on triange bases, combine two to make a complete ruin or just one as a ruined ruin!
As a draftsman I tend to think of things in scale. 28mm models almost perfectly fit a 1/4"=1'-0" scale. So a building that would be 20' wide in real life would be 5" wide on the table. Also, O scale railroad (Lionel) is a pretty close fit, so you can look for some old or used railroad models and modify them to suit your needs.
Why is a thread that has no activity for 3 YEARS being resurrected?!?!?!?!
