Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello everyone! I have recently gotten quite confused. I sold my daemonhunters due to being broke and out of work. Now I have a job again and my dept will be payed off in time. But I want to keep playing 40k.... And I want a unique fun army that I can get started on by the end of the year. Here is what I have been thinking, and what I would like is if you could give me any ideas or opinions or thoughts on the following ideas/subjects:
1. 40k Skaven.... What race would be best for this? I was thinking maybe orks... And I DOOO love orks... but it all depends.... I was also thinking converting them into nurgle daemons as I do love nurgle.... Not sure, how could you guys take the basic skaven night runners box set and turn them into 40k models for any and all races?! Is it possible what limitations are put on it? I want a showcase army this time around. Something no one else has.... If I have to do loads of converting, I will!
2. Steampunk. I am a big fan of steampunk. Have been since I first found out about it a year and a half ago. I realize that is not super long to have known about it, but oh well. Anyways, I recently came across a necron steampunk army that was linked from LO and it got me thinking of that too. What other races could be steampunked? I got a good idea of how i could add steampunky stuff to anything really, but besides crons, what would be a good fun army to do this with that is either semi original or just weird and fun?
3. Both: Somehow turn skaven into some 40k army and make them steampunk?! Skavens with monocles, pith helmets, top hats, goggles, weird ray guns, weird contraptions, cogs, gears, all that jazz.... But what could they count as? What could I do to really make them feel like that army and not just some random 'what race is this supposed to be?!' Is there some way to combine both skaven and steampunk within the 40k universe and somehow make it undeniably 'oh it must be ____ race'. Where the blank could be anything from any race in there. I don't want to be just stuck with the standard ork ideas. It is obvious that skaven as orks are the best fit, especially with a steampunk feel. But Any other ideas out there?
Thanks in advance guys!
ps. Outside the box thinking is key here! I will be handing out rep to any and every half decent idea!!
The Imperial Guard may work the Russ is pretty much says IG. Also you could turn Valkyries into flying steam ships, also they already use ab humans.
also do you have the link to that Necron Steampunk army I would like to see it
If you do things right people wont be sure if you have done anything at all.
I'd like to see the Necron army too.
Any horde army would work, really. You could almost field the straight-up WHFB units on round bases as nids, though I personally would go for Orks or IG. Orks would better fit, I think, unless you want to go overboard with Skaven technology.
Well since IG has already been suggested, I will say Tau for a steampunk 40k skaven army.
Clanrats as kroot obviously and perhaps jezzails as fire warriors ( or any skaven with a decent-looking blunderbuss from empire handgunners or wherever).
Battle suits will be tricky, but gutter runners could work as stealth suits with the addition of a suitable looking gun (and goggles, goggles on everything )
Vehicles would be hovercrafts, with big fans/propellers pointed to the ground and big weapons mounted on top. Just because you're going with a steampunk theme doesn't mean you have to use black powder cannons, crystals and spinning spheres (like the shokk attack gun) says energy weapons like anything. You could use the crystal from the fire prism.
The problem is it won't immiediatly say Tau to the observer, as tau is very sleek and smooth in their technology which is pretty much the opposite of steampunk.
Rather a lot for 2c but i'm in a generous mood
I'm working on a SP Tau army already. I don't have many conversions up just yet, but I'm getting there.
Kroot with goggles, their guns and other assorted gear is good enough. They look so cool with goggles on.
Heavily converted team of 'Samurai' battlesuits. I maxed out the army with BSs, because I love the models and like to add my own flair. It was originally going to be more of a Gundam theme, but now I'm really digging the Japanese SteamPunk ideas. Not quite pure SP I know, but the mix of beautiful artwork, vivid colors, and brass arcana makes the army unique.
I'd stay with IG for the skaven. They have the right Horde-of-squishiness that the Skaven need to thrive.
http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...ever-seen.html <--- Link to the thread that links to the origin of the steampunk necrons. As you notice, the link I posted is to another librarium online post that is where I found it. The post then sends you to the original place for the conversions and guy doing them. I don't need rep for this link, instead give it to the guy who originally shared them with us at that link...
But to stay on topic, it is sad but it does seem very much so that IG and orks are really the only ones that fit.... I love orks, I do but if I were to do an ork army it would be a deffwing army.
So one idea I was thinking of today at work is to make big mechanical constructs with cogs/gears and the like with a skaven on top with levers and switches controlling it. And it would be roughly the same size as a meganob, if not slightly bigger. And it would be a 'counts as' meganob.
Deff koptas could be mini blimps with propellers and such. A kin to some sorta gyrokopter type dealio.
Stormboys could be something out of a Leonardo Da Vinci's flying machine with a steam engine connected to it.
Battlewagon could be some victorian looking train dealio? Not sure on that one.
I would want 2 full units of meganobs and 3 battlewagons. and have some random deff kopta/stormboy squads to change things up with at larger point games. But how would i convert a battlewagon? or rather, how would you, to make it steampunk? The idea is that it doesnt look orky, but rather, very advanced yet victorian and brassy and cool in nature. Think skaven/ork, yet, architecturally victorian in nature without the 'unfinished' look to it and instead a more sophisticated feel to it - at least, for skaven/orks. hehe
I am not dead set on orks quite yet. But I am just trying to figure things out right now.
IF I were to throw out the whole skaven idea and just go steampunk, with the exception of orks, necrons, and Tau (I don't like tau too much haha) What ideas for each army could you guys come up with? Again, more rep to be handed out. Think of this thread as the icecream truck of rep, only the icecream is virtually free.... and not icecream.....

For Skaven... Dark eldar rules would fit well I think, the whole hit and run back grounds mesh well. I'd totaly wait for a new codex though, Dark eldar have been put on the back burner for too long... they're burning! *cry*
For steampunk... I think guard, I've always wanted to do a Tank Girl themed guard army and thats pretty steam punky... well more just punk but oh well
Tomb Kings, Marines, Eldar
I would still take ideas on skaven armies though. As in what army would be good as skaven and what to use from WHFB and so on. I don't mind doing tons of converting, but I am somewhat broke, so I wouldn't want a super huge model count. With skaven it is fine to explore the ideas of any army. It is just the steampunk i want to stay away from orks, crons, and tau, for the reasons stated above.
Then again, I would still combine skaven and steampunk, but I am not sure what armies besides IG and orks those two things could really fit well together and still be obvious that 'oh that must be eldar, what a neat idea using skaven and putting a steampunk feel on them'.... How the heck could elder ever be similar to skaven or steampunk or both? Basically those kinds of questions..
Outside the box thinking, combining logic, with the illogical, steampunk, skaven, or both, with each army so to speak. What can you guys come up with!?
I wasn't really considering dark eldar as an idea for 40k skaven, but now that i think of it, it could fit quite nicely with some decent conversions! And the hit and run tactics do seem to mesh well together too! But it is true their codex is somehow even older then father time....
TANK GIRL ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too bad there are no good girl games workshop models available. I don't mind using green stuff and plastic card quite extensively, but I can't model a full tank girl from the ground up. But you are right, that army would be quite killer!!!
Yay for Jen and her awesome idea! Any others?
PS. sorry for the double post!
Why not combine Skaven and Steampunk and use Dark Eldar rules for the resulting army? Don't know too much about Skaven units/models or Dark Eldar rules (apart from they're so out of date geological time has been re-written), but they use those skimming skiff things don't they? How cool would those look rigged out as airships with steam engines (think of the flying ship from Stardust)? And you could model a steam construct to represent the Talos scorpion thing. Could dark eldar wytches be represented by Remade armed with CCWs?
Rat-men wearing goggles, monnecles, waistcoats and top hats and armed with long muskets, blunderbusses and flintlock/clockwork pistols? How can you refuse?
If green power armour is good enough for the Fallen One, then its good enough for the rest of us...
