Originally I wanted a daemon prince, but I recently found out they are releasing a new DP as a plastic kit and it comes with wings and looks great(imo, some don't like it). So until then I want to use a lord/sorcerer as my main HQ unit(currently I'm using a raptor aspiring champ as my army HQ). The problem is I don't do a lot of conversion work , and I'm not sure what model might work best for such a project.
So my main questions:
1)What model would work best for a lord/sorc if I wanted to add wings to it? It shouldnt be in term armor because term armored lords/sorcs are not allowed to take wings/jp in the current codex. Why term armor stops chaos powers from warping their bones into wings I don't know, but that's how it is.
2)What wings would work best for this? I've seen a lot of people using the possessed bat-like wings. They seem like a good choice(proper size, very chaos-y, not terribly hard to get) but my biggest problem is that everyone uses them for this purpose. If there is another pair of wings that could be used and would help my lord stand out a bit, I'd really like to find and use them.
3)Best method for attaching wings? Pinning ? Just slap it on with super glue? Pinning and then green stuff to make it look a bit more "evolved" or natural looking(natural meaning it looks like it is growing out of the model, not just something I slapped on). Any other tips on converting, modelling, attaching, or painting wings would be very helpful. The holy grail for me would be a step by step of how to attach them and paint them up, but I doubt it exists.
Hopefully someone out there has been in the same situation and can help me out a bit. The biggest conversion I've done to date was swapping out heads from the regular csms with possessed (I bought some bits, the wings were like $8+$3 shipping) and I took a unicorn from fantasy and added demon horns to make it a nightmare for my dark elf general.
I've seen plenty of Lords/chaos marines done up with wings and like you say, many of them now use the Possessed wings. And they really are the best and easiest choice but if you're like me, you want something different.
Some options are off the tyranid gargoyles, chaos furies, dark elf harpies. Or depending on your theme (maybe slaneeshy or theentchy) the wings off the eldar swooping hawk exarch or the bretonian pegesus knights. The last two are a very non-chaod looking but do work well if you theme the army right.
I'd always pin anything like that, in fact I pin almost any join thats not a nice big flat spot or too small to pin. It just adds a bit of strength to the join and helps you do a dry-run to see if it looks right without getting glue everywhere. Depending on what wings you choose I'd then GS around the join to meld it to the armour or if your using a plastic body I'd cut open the back and bend out the edges so it looks like the wings have burst out of the marines spine through the armour.
My store manager converted raptors from robed Dark Angels with some feathered wings, dunno which kit they came from unfortunately. It looked like a "fallen angel kinda thing and I'm sure you could do this for a lord as well.
Possesed wings fit on the back pack partof power armour
