I'm working on an ork army, and I was looking through the pictures in the codex. Are there any tips to painting perfectly straight lines (such as the blue stripes on the bad moons), or painting the ork symbols and emblems? I see little ork face symbols painted on the circular metal joint on the back of some of the boyz, and it boggles my mind how they do it.
Any help would be appreciated.
All the emblems are done with just a steady hand and a good brush for the most part. Apart from just practicing your freehand, there are a couple of other things you could do.
*Sketch out your design on a piece of paper, then draw it on the model with a good art pencil, then paint around the guidelines.
*You could also use transfers on the models and then paint over them. Thats what alot of people do to get that 'painted on' look.
Planning out your freehand will always get you better results. Good luck!

I have just started on a freehand tutorial, its still in the WIP but it might give you some Idea.
I have repeated step 4 and 5 two more time etch and now i starting to look quite good. (please remember that the model is tiny and the lines are extremely thin, but the basic are the same) I will post more pictures later this evening, if everything go as planed.
Keep the paint diluted and thin :)
(first rule in Zentradis book of painting)
Another trick that I remember from elementary school that I want to try on minis... Carve the design into a potato... Use the potato as a stamp....
By pressing the raised emblem into paint, and then pressing it against paper, you will reduce how much paint is on the "stamp" and then you can press the emblem onto the mini...
The less paint on the stamp, the more "dirty" the emblem should look..
Mind you this may only going to work for simple shapes. And you need to carve the emblem as a mirror image.
