I am a huge inquisition/grey knights fan, and I really want to do a model conversion of Justicar Alaric, but a rather unorthodox one.
At the end of the novel Hammer of Daemons Alaric fights his arch enemy Duke Venilator (a chaos champion). If you haven't read the book, Venilator steals his armor and forces him to fight as a gladiator, but at the end of the novel in their final confrontation, Alaric regains both his gauntlets, his nemesis halberd and his wrist mounted storm bolter.
I am really intrigued by the idea of showing Alaric in somewhat chaos-influenced gladiator armor (basically very light chain mail, perhaps no leg protection, even bare legs) but wearing his power armor gauntlets and holding his halberd and storm bolter.
Obviously I could just use space marine arms (or better yet, the grey knight terminator arms) but I am really having a hard time finding a body that would work for this conversion.
It would need to be human, WITHOUT power armor, and look pretty ripped.
I considered some of the Catachan HQ models, but they just didn't feel right, and I felt like they didn't have the right sort of clothing.
Are there any cool gladiator-type models from either Warhammer or 40k that anyone could think of to use in this conversion?
I would really appreciate any ideas people have!
You could use a Chaos Marauder, maybe swap the head since SMs don't have long flowing hair. The Halberd the SB could just be bits and you could GS some gauntlets on his arms. I'd look at the Chaos Fantasy range first.
Wow, yeah, that's pretty much what I was looking for! I'm not as familiar with the Fantasy line of models, so I wasn't looking in the right places.
If anyone else has any good suggestions, I am open to them!
Look into the Blood Bowl range aswell, I'm sure there's some nails looking humans in chainmail loitering around in there.
Deffinatly have a look at the Chaos range though. Remember Marines have the Black carapace though so will have lost of 'sockets' in his flesh.
Foloowing on from what both the others have said. Definatly go with Maruader Torso and arms if you want a Gladiator look. I've used thearms on my Zerkers and they fit really well with the Marine scale (link in my Sig: Iron Wolves)
I'd be getting the gauntlets from either chaos marines or chaos termies. Termies might be better coz thers more room to fit a storm bolter then. As for the bolter itself, simply mounting a normal stoprm bolter to a gauntlet often looks way too big and out of place. Try getting two bolt pistols and sticking them together (you may want to GS the houseing so it looks like one), chop off the sickel mags so the bottom of the pistols is flat and stick it to the fist. You can then add a drum feed or side mounted sickel mag to the storm bolter using a normal bolter clip or the mag off a pintle storm bolter cut to suit.
For the halberd i'd suggest bronze rod and drill through both the fists like you would if you were pinning. This means the haft is one sold piece and wont bend or snap, plus it keeps it straight and means it wont look like sveral short rods stuck together.
If all else fails the Mordheim range actually has Gladiators in it. While it means you'll have to oder them from UK (not sure where you're based) they already come dressed as gladiators and its relativly simple to then change them over. Not sure if the scale will match up ok tho coz I think Mordhime tends to be a little smaller.
Hope I've helped
I think the consensus is that the Marauder body is the best bet, and after seeing PHM's berserker conversions, I think I'm going to go that direction.
The next bit, then is finding a good head. That is nearly just as tricky! I like the bald marine heads, but not so much for this project.
I'm thinking I'd like something a little more traditionally handsome, with hair, mainly because that's just how I imagine Alaric.
Well if you're going traditional SMs usually have short hair or no hair. I'd look at IG heads, they have a lot of military type haircuts and good faces, especially for special characters.
First off, thanks Eisenhorn.
As for the head. I've always liked the picture in the Daemonhunters Codex of the helmetless Grey Knight fighting off the hoard of daemons by himself/ The GK is wearing a kind of leather cap on his head. I thought this looked really cool as it gives a very monastic look to the marine. If you wanted to do this then GS would be the best way, over a normal plastic marine head.
You said you want a hero type look tho so maybe go for a head off a sergeant or character. A metal head might go well as often they have good expressions and features. You can then scalpt on a cap or hair if you want. Maybe even do him up with long blonde flowing locks like Fabio! No, don't do that, please. Although I disagree with Prince's "traditionally marine are bald" look i think in this case it certainly suits the feel of GKs. And who said bald can't be heroic? Look at Samuel L. Jackson. That said having hair allows you to scalpt it flowing in a cartain direction adding movement and life to the model.
I think I've argued both side and come out nowhere, sorry. Some ideas might catch your eye though
Perhaps Valten from the Empire Classics range? He had long blonde hair and little armour.
