The 3D revolution for us mere mortals is around the corner. 10 years ago I actually worked briefly for Materialize, a university-linked high-tech company in Belgium who pioneered the 3D printing technology so I was quite surprised to see the following.
After 10 years it seems the technology is trickling down to consumer level as you can buy the following for around 500EURO, a fully open-sourced and functional 3D printer for at home... Soon, gone will be the days of resin casting...

It still looks very basic in what it can do as to shapes and stuff. But if I ever have some time off (and 500USD) to spend i'm definatly going to look into making one of those. It looks like most, if not all, of the parts are easy obtainable in my part of the world.
Time for some epic WHFB castle scenery
Ah, so you saw that too eh?
Yes I've been keeping my eye on this technology for a while. At the moment, the most ecconomically viable thing to do is to design small bits in a CAD package and ship them off to be 3D printed by one of the many companies out there that offer that service. Then you can make resin molds for these pieces. I know of at least one person that's done this and the result was quite impressive (although they only used it to make guns).
One of these days, when I get some more cash I'll try it myself. Just have to learn how to use Blender first.
