Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm looking to start painting a blood angels army but I hate the standard colour code as I find it far to bright. I have been trying to create the red used to paint the Baal predator on page 191 of the current 40k rulebook, but I can't quite get the colour right.
I have tried a mix of dark flesh with various reds over both white and black base coats with no success i've also had a play around adding the new red wash to this and this also failed.
Has anyone managed to create this colour red or got a link to someone who has? or simply a suggestion of how to create this as I have run out of ideas.
All help appreciated.
Warning this user is totally insane...
Base coat:Chaos Black
Blood Red and Dark Flesh
Choas Black, Blood Red and Dark flesh: To recesses
Blood Red and Dark Flesh (3:1, highlight)
Blood Red (highlight)
Fiery Orange (Hard Edge)
Baal Red Wash
Fiery Orange and Skull White (Hard Edge)
This gives and moderately dark red, but with darker recesses and slightly lighter raised edges. It looks good, but takes a long time to paint.

What do you mean the standard colour code? What are you using?
I used to do my blood angles like this: magenta ink wash over white, then blood red (with just a touch of scorched brown mixed in), followed by a red ink wash. Then games workshop decided to stop selling inks... damn. So now I'm looking for a nice paint scheme too. I've experimented with the colour schemes shown in the recent white dwarf where they showed the 'evey metal way of painting your space hulk terminators but it always came out way too dark for my liking. I think blood angles should be blood red and bright - not orange but definitely bright!
Anyway, this girl on youtube does a very nice blood angle -it's a bit advanced but well worth the effort: YouTube - GirlPainting's Channel
Those are some awesome videos. I think the OP is looking for a darker red color scheme, the one in the video has a little too much orange for some of us. I think maybe they can follow the highlighting up to blood red and then do the extreme highlights with some watered down white.
I woulda been fine if she stopped around step 3 maybe? Then the next 4 videos was more highlighting going up to orange and white. I just like the first couple dark washes and maybe the Blood Red highlight and then bam, done.
i don't have much pictures, but what i do is the most time consuming way, the paint monkey taught me this way you get some very nice red colour.
1ST:white undercoat.yes white.
2ND:a mix of blood red and red ink, thin coat.
3RD:repeat step 2, MANY TIMES, until you get the red you want.
4TH:hightlight with a mix of orange with snakebite leather.
this is the way TPM(the paint monkey) taught. anymore problem, just PM him.
