The gaming table from GW is very nice to play on, but the trouble it has is that put full of skulls makes the table suitable to represent a Khornate Daemon World and nothing else.
I was hired to paint up a table and some terrain, and especially to get rid of the skulls and make it look natural:
I wrote more about it in a blog entry.
That looks great! I didn't know that the realm of battle board had skulls on it... More reason not to get it. From the ridiculous price and the as your client said "cheesy skulls" I don't understand any reason to buy it. Anyways I like the destroyed rhino. Did you do any other terrain bits? (Cities of death, bastions,... etc.)
200€ is too much for a unpainted table.
For 25€ you can buy 3 styro boards, put together = same size as GW.
For 20€ you buy paint & glue.
12€ for some flock, sand for texture is free.
This is an old pic after first paint, we've repainted most of it but i don't have picture of it's current state.(brown didn't look good)

Skulls don't only appear on a khorne planet you know If a particular area has seen repeated fighting, then you're bound to find loads of corpses just under the surface of the ground. Admittedly I'd prefer there was a few ribcages etc on there, but that's just me! We tend to use the skulls as difficult terrain, although AT does cover them over at every opportunity as our board is currently all yellow so the skulls can be easily missed. I've wrecked 2 land raiders by not noticing them when deploying
Well, the problem is that there aren't any rib cages or femurs or anything. I mean, where did all of those skull come from? It can't be a mass grave or sluaghter because there would be other bones around.
The only explaination I have is that they are supernatural deamonic skulls harvested to adorn the blood god's throne.
On someo ther topics, I haven't done a whole lot more terrain for him, but he's considered giving me more projects, so I'm pretty likely to do something like that. It really all depends on whether or not he wants to play on a bastion.
And one more topic, you can make a very sturdy gaming board out of blocks of wood. I don't remember how much they cost me at the time, but you can do almost anything with them.
You still have to paint it and cover up a bunch of skulls right? :p
I think building is half the fun...and if it saves me lots of money, even better.
Anyway the board looks better without those skulls, i don't know why GW puts some of those details in.
Makes you wonder what goes on in the mind of those artists
