Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm going to be repainting a model (my only SM, received from a friend), and, because it is a SM, it obviously needs a super speshul icon. But how should I paint this icon? A bunch of trial and error, or tape it, or what?
Thanks in advance.
You can try whatever you want, sometimes going simple can have better results than doing it over the top. Try to think of a symbol that will work well with whatever colours your Marine will have. Also If you think of a name for him it may help to give him an icon that suits his name.
I ask this question because I've painted an icon on him once before, but it didn't turn out very well.
I've recently started trying to get better at freehand (which, I assume is what you're asking about). My first attempt was to do the shoulder pad icon on a marine. You can see my process here (Xbanditsx WIP projects).
The best advice I have to to practice a bunch first before trying it on your model. Good luck!
use a fine brush and pretend you're drawing it
try it on paper or bases or something
do the outline first then color it in
i do all of my BT icons freehand, some look lopsided, some don't. just takes practice.
There are 4 main ways to do logos and 'graphics' in my opinion:
1. DIY decals. See my WIP thread or the tutorial in the tutorial section. Basically the most expensive method but with a little patience you get good results. This is very effective for simple designs but doesn't work well for complex designs involving shading and colour gradients .
2. sketch it on paper, trace, transfer and paint freehand. Only really works well for larger, flat areas, like tanks.
3. sketch it freehand with a soft pencil to get the basic shape and then paint freehand.
4. Sculpt it, then paint it. Can work well but probably takes the most skill. Not very practical for very complicated shapes but a real time-saver for simple ones.
I'd have a go at 3 personally. Just remember to gentle sketch it out in pencil on the model first - that's the magic trick.
Thanks everybody, for the advice; you've been a great help. I've basecoated said miniature already, so I should be able to try out your tips some time tonight.
