I have Eldar that are painted white and purple (biel tan style). I plan to base some with flock, some with brown rough rocks and some with a mixture of the two. What I can't work out is what colour to paint the sides of the bases? They have a white undercoat on at the moment. Do I keep them white? go for black or maybe a green or brown colour? Any ideas or experiences on what would look the best please?
I always do my bases the same kind of style to tie the army together. I always basecoat my bases with sand, and then if I want a city style base, paint it grey, then dry brush a lighter grey over the top, or for a foresty look, paint the sand brown, again dry burhs a lighter brown over that, and then dab bits of static grass on it.
If you want to make rocks, either by some small ones, or get a bucket of sand and stick or drop or too of PVA or super glue into it, then as the glue dries mix it around in the sand, eventually it'll dry giving you a nice solid shape,

I usually use a color that compliments my color scheme. For example, my Lizardmen bases are green, my Necron bases are black, and my SM base was red.
I suppose a white base would go nicely with your color scheme.
I'd recommend going for something muted, either a grey or brown. Green is a little old school and can detract from the actual mini (obviously this depends on the colour scheme)
Look at what you are going to do on the bases i'd personally go for something like a muted brown colour, such as a Khemri brown/Graveyard Earth on the rims of the bases, then a mixture of the rocks with some flock or static grass.

I agree with Sir Theobold, green doesn't look very good on the rims of bases.
Normally, if you've gone for an earthy/grassy base, browns and black are the best colour for the base rims. Personally i use graveyard earth.

Wait a minute... purple? Biel-Tan? Something's not right here...
Purple schemes aside, I tend to leave the sides of my bases black. But it really depends what look you're going for - sandy desert, paint them brown; grass, paint them green; or if you really want to go 'all-out awesome' on the bases then do them lava-style like I do (see the link in my sig) and leave the sides black.

I now have my Graveyard Earth paint, but..It does not seem to cover the white very well even with a couple of coats? Should I be undercoating first? I tried painting the white black and then cover that with the graveyard Earth but again it still was not covering well!
