Ok, I prove my ignorance, whats baking sand?
I don't- I boil it. But really, you're not going to eat it, only glue it to bases and scenery then paint over it. You've got little to fear except for things that baking nor boiling would help with anyway.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
Why would you boil sand? Just acting out of ignorance I suppose :-)

Alright you boil or bake sand that you find on the beach or anywhere else to remove all the bugs and other stuff that is living in the sand. I personally bake it for an hour on a medium temperature. You could probably do it for less time but an hour is my preference. Also when you are done strain it in a strainer.
i wouldn't want to ruin one of my nice pans so i'd be afraid to boil it
i use play sand or something, my dad gave me some when i visited him and mentioned i was planning to get some sand for modeling
i just swirl it with some soap in a contaner then strain it through a coffee filter, it works okay. usually i don't even bother.
i can't imagine there are many micro-organisms living on sand once it sits in a container in your garage for a week
All of the sand I use on terrain was liberated from the wild!
I have never washed it or baked it, I do spread it on some paper if it needs drying, I have never had any issues doing this.
