My Cadian army continues to grow and grow, and I have decided to embark upon a project for my army that has been in my mind for ages: Armoured cars. I got the conversion ideas from an old white dwarf issue, and I plan to use the chimeras rules for them. Basically, the parts I intend to use are as follows.
For the main 'body', the top half of a Leman Russ hull and The bottom half and frontal armour of a chimera hull. This will probably require a bit of cutting to get them to line up.
For wheels I was thinking something from the ork range.
I'll probably add some mudguards and some engine parts. Possibly from the sentinel.
For the turret I am a little less sure. I have considered using the chimera turret, but I am wondering wether it would look better without a turret.
Plasticard will cover the enormous 'holes' where the tracks would normally go.
I have no idea how long it will take me to gather all these part together, so I've got plenty of time to get more ideas. So, hit me! Let me know what you think of the project, any suggestions you may have, any things you reckon I should include... you get the idea.
I don't have any firsthand experience with the Leman Russ or Chimera models, but here are the results of my "research".
First of all, here and here are Owen Rees' Armored Cars, from his 374th Tahnelian Airborne. I guess these are the models which inspired you.
Here is a WIP IG Armored Car, made of plasticard and parts from the Chimera kit, maybe can be useful to identify some useful bits.
I think that using parts from a Leman Russ and from a Chimera can be a little too expensive. I guess that a cheaper way is to use parts from military models, 1/35 scale (I guess that it is the scale which works better with WH40K models, you can see an example here).
Have a look at the Tamiya 1/35 range (link to the online store), you can draw some useful information and maybe find some plastic kits at a reasonable price, which you can mix and match with GW pieces.
Here are my favourites:
8-wheeled Armored Car: this is probably the biggest one.
Armored Recon. Half-track: this is an half-track, not an armored car, but I like its looks nonetheless.
German Armored Car: this is quite similar to Owen Rees' 4-wheeled car.
Light Armored Vehicle:an Humvee, looks like an high-tech version of the vehicle above. Very good for Cadians IMO.
Hope this helps and good luck with your project... please post some pics once you have done!
I don't plan to buy a Leman Russ kit and a chimera kit. I have actually already got the part of the Leman Russ chassis I needed and it was only £3 from the site I got it from. Thank you very much for the links though. They've given me some good ideas.
It was Owen Rees cars that inspired me, in particular the second one. My main decision I need to make is on the turret. I like Owen Rees second car, but I'm wondering how to do a multilaser/heavy bolter if there is no turret. My original idea was to do something similar to the WIP car you gave me a link to, except without the turret. Maybe a twin-linked heavy stubber with a shield, that could count as a heavy bolter.
I especially like the Humvee you gave me a link to. The trick is, I guess, to get an armoured car that is remeniscent of modern ones, but still looks gothic. That is why I might be a little careful of using military models.
Thanks for your help though Quimby, very much appreciated!
I love armoured cars. I think they will look great. Plasticard will be your friend here i think. I can't wait to see them finished. Just do me a favor. GET A BLOODY CAMERA!

On a more serious note I have found some more material to give me ideas. Have a look at this website:
The Armadillo truck and the Trojan APC were the ones that caught my eye. Especially the Trojan. Click on the images to enlarge them.
