I have been inactive for quite a while, and did not paint a lot of new things, but right now I am in the process of creating a new SM army, centered around Bikes mostly. To break the monotony of paining bikes, bikes and more bikes I am building a squad of 10 Deathwatch Marines that will play the role of Sternguards in my list. As all my Marines are a bit… “twisted”, there is a fair number of Chaos parts mixed in there. So for Sterns, I have some Chaos heads, shoulder pads, Berserker legs and even Knights of Chaos helmets mixed in for good measure.
As far as painting scheme…
I was thinking of highlighting their black armor with red color (extreme highlights), building to the final look from dark scab red to perhaps blood red. This I know. Perhaps wash with red ink to give the black armor a nice shading and undertone. But as far as their inquisitorial shoulder pads, I was thinking about using gold instead of silver. Would that be OK? Are there more than one color schemes for Deathwatch? Is gold acceptable?
Deathwatch wear black armour when they are part of a deathwatch unit. Deathwatch marines are not 'full time' soldiers of the ordos Xenos. Basically, a marine might be called to join the deathwatch for a special mission. This could happen to any marine, regardless of rank. After they have served their time with the deathwatch, they return to their chapter, and wear the normal colour armour, with the addition of a deathwatch shoulderpad to show that they have served with the deathwatch. Just some food for thought
As for the painting, the idea of highlighting black armour with red sounds good to me. As for the shoulder pads, if you want to paint them gold then go for it, although silver is the traditional colour for deathwatch. Silver does look a bit better against black. Theres nothing to stop you painting it gold though, and I'm sure you can think of plenty of fluffy reasons for them to use this colour.
Hope this helps.

As far as I'm aware, fluffwise, there is only the one deathwatch colour scheme, black with silver left arm. But, they're your models, paint them how you want. I'm sure somebody can come up with a fairly plausible explanation of why they might have painted their armour differently to normal.
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.

You mean like this,
I DID NOT PAINT ANY OF THE ABOVE MODELS!!!!!
I have also seen a deathwatch army that had black armour, chapter colour shoulder pads and chapter colour helmets. That was very cool, pity as i can't find any pic's of it. I know, i'm pretty sure it's on whineseer someplace. You try having a look there.
I hope this helps you tho!
I AM BOOMER!
OMG - These are splendid! Mine will be half as good at the most, and that still will make me very happy I actually decided to stick with the canon. Seems that this topic got very little responses which can be translated into: "Dude, look on Lexicanum, Deathwatch is WHAT it is, and that's that"... At least, everyone will know what they are...
Thanks for the responses and links.
