The ultramarines transfers just aren't coming out how they should. They are making my marines look like crap. Any other ways to put the U on instead of transfers? I tried making a stencil but it just didn't come out good at all! I have a tourny comin up and want my marines to look good. Please if anyone can help me with this problem it would be greatly appriciated.
Oh also I don't have enough transfers for all my units!
Free hand it!
First draw a U then add the lines on tops of the U and THEN bulk it out a little more if it doesn't look quite right
If you haven't free handed something like this before the easiest way to do it, rather than trying to free hand the entire outline of the symbol, is to just draw simple portions at a time then keep adding to it
getting the Ω symbol is a lot easier than a raven, i've been practising on a piece of paper with a 0.1 fine-liner pen. out line the shoulders with the Ω with pencil.
( and yes i know the symbol is upside down)

I found that with the transfers, especially on a curved surface, it is better to trim close to the symbol all the way around... for the inside dip in the U, cut a v notch... This will help keep the transfer lying smooth on the shoulder pad...
That is the best advice I can offer for applying the transfer. As for it not looking good, You will need a spray varnish to seal it down, and conceal the "transparent" edges.
Otherwise, you are stuck freehanding your U.. Practice it on paper.
Practice makes perfect, I tend to place the transfer where i want it, get it as flat as I can using a wet brush, then let it dry, then I just dab it with a a wet brush/ sponge to try and neaten up any raised bits on the transfer, then after its dried again, jsut try and carefully crop off any of the remaining raised bits on the transfer with a craft knife, if any of the design is unfortunate enough to come off aswell, well , its not too hard to paint it back on , then I tend to do a watered down PVA glue wash over the transfer area once its all dry so theres no risk of the transfer coming off by uncarefull hands.
As for the lack of transfers you mentioned, go into GW and ask if they have any spare transfer sheets, my local GW has a box full of transfers they just give away, due to the fact they dontuse them and they jsut sit in a box under the counter. I asked for one sheet the other day, and I given about 6 !!
Thanks for all the advice everyone. I will definatly use them. Its going to take alot of practice with the free handing. I tried last night for almost two hours, but you dont want to know what they came out looking like! I dont have a GW store in my area and my independent retailer dont have any extras ;-(. Thanks for all the help everyone posted its really appriciated and will be extremely useful. I think im just going to buy the finest brush tip I could find and practice freehanding none stop until they look good. Thanks again and if anyone has any other useful tips when drawing the insignia its always appriciated.
You could always try using the tip of a toothpick, its what I used to do when it came to trying to do things like that
Thats a really good tip to get the outline down then I can just fill in! Thanks a ton im going to try that tonight when I get off work.
