After finally kicking the WOW habit, and finding myself with a bit of extra cash and a lot of extra time on my hands, I took up 40K. Been (slowly) painting up the boyz, and the second batch turned out... not great, but not half bad, I think.
I'm comfortable with drybrushing (used it for the skin and the base) and I love the washes (pants have sepia and then mud, straps have black wash, metal has black wash, skin has green wash). I'm not yet good at highlighting - about all I can manage is edging the weapons without it looking like crap. Could really use some advice along those lines - I like the way that the skin looks, but it -is- a bit dark. Definitely not confident enough to try woad yet!
If there's anything I'm not happy with (aside from the occasional bit of sloppy brushwork, heh), it's that the scheme I've got is a little monotone. Brown base, brown pants, brown straps, blue accents and green ork... for that matter, they're not that "orky" either, but I'm not sure whether I should just damage their gear some or go straight to putting checks and dags on stuff. I could probably use more practice before I commit myself to freehand work. (Then again, I've got the lord's own plenty of these boyz to paint!)
Comments or advice? Should I have kicked this over to the projects forum? (Sounds a bit pretentious to start a thread there when I don't even have a unit of sluggas together yet...)
I almost can't tell you've used washes, are you letting it settle in the recesses?
it looks good so far, but as the one above said I would make sure to allow the wash to settle into the reccesses and also maybe a different color for the boots would help them to stand out some more, and remember your orcs dont have to be green

Pretty good for a starting point, but you've definitely got to break up the brown.
Try making the boots black or grey or something, work some colour variation into the groundwork (dirt's not all the same colour - try drybrushing a touch of other earthtones here and there to get a more natural look... Adding some static grass can be great, too), and I'd definitely paint the base's rim another colour. Black, blue, grey, purple, day-glo pink if you must, just get something other than brown on there!
Have you checked out GW's Ork painting guides yet?? Some of it's a bit advanced, but it's a good example of ways to get them looking their best.
Varying earth tones, check. (Was going to try static grass on the next unit, heh... not too late to add some to this one, though.)
Rim color change, check. Indeed, too much brown is too much.
Boots, gray or black would look pretty good, I think. Should I just paint over what I've got? Black undercoat, adeptus battlegray, a little codex gray highlight, mud wash? Haven't seen anyone talk about gray clothing.
The GW guides are great where I can do the stuff they're suggesting. I can edge highlight metal all right, for example. What I'm not good at are the highlights of curved surfaces... the skin especially. The blending of the color into the next color is the problem... the highlight looks like I just blobbed it on. I can't thin the paint down when doing that kind of highlight, though, because then it just runs into the recesses (precisely where I don't want the highlight). I'm wondering if I should just use an almost-dry brush? GW's not really helpful when it comes down to "this is the thing you need to do with the brush to get it to do that"...
The fur in the hats came out a lot lighter than I'd intended, but I think I know what to do next time - White Dwarf had a Vermin Lord masterclass with an explanation of how to make the fur effect I was wanting to go for.
Wash settling... well, I thought I had, anyway, and they definitely helped in the definition - might just be that my photography isn't very good (need to quit using the flash at point-blank, heh.) When you say "let the wash settle", should I be brushing on a lot of wash, so that it's got little pools standing in the crevices?
Thanks to everyone who's got advice. These guys aren't so bad that I wouldn't put them on the table, but I'd like to do better.
for teh boots - just wash with scorched brown + black as this will add the earthen tone of dirty leather and you have teh highlights already in place...
when you are highlighting, use a finer brush and use tiny amounts of paint - if you find the paint spilling over, you have either too thin paint or else too much to apply to the areas you need it. I would use a flow medium or glazing medium to help keep the paint where you need it.

Applied some of the advice and I'm happy with the improvements I'm seeing. Went with a dark gray boot, put a little highlight on it (not terribly well-done, I'm afraid), then washed it with mud and black. Base got the same dark gray and then lighter gray over it. Gave the arms a much heavier wash, making sure there was plenty of wash left in the crevices. Finally, added a couple of patches of static grass - doesn't look great there, but this ain't a meadow, and it does a good job of breaking up the brown.
I think I'll do the other four in this batch like this, and then modify my technique a little on future ones. After all that green wash, the skin's pretty dark - I probably need to build up to a lighter green, then wash it.
They look much better.
They could use some highlights especially on the blue because it looks pretty flat.
But, you could paint all of your models to the same quality and it would still look great. My comments are only advice to make your models the best quality possible. Most people don't paint every single model in their army to have full highlights and shading.

While there's always room for improvement (getting the skin tones right, adding a bit of depth to the blue, etc...), you've got a nice, tabletop ready model right there. Keep tinkering with things as you go and you'll have the boyz looking top-notch in no time.
