I was thinking of trying to do a Imperial knight style "small" super heavy, And some ideas were as follows. If you have any ideas or advice please say so (Inc where i can find old historys of types of knight) - I was thinking of a Battletech "Mad Cat" walker with jet packs, (Or a large "Raven class") possibly with troop transport capability.
Make the Cockpit out of plasticard / Tubing, going to a "Triangle- like" nose and two cockpits with screens made with plasticard / 1-2mm clear acrylic, and rivets, The pilots are to be valk heads on sentinal torso's (good for seat backing too) maybe with "glazed" control panels - made from thinneracrylic with "Tac display" screens with things carved into them, then washed so it lookes projected.
I was going to do a walker with different sizel plasticard tubing slotting into one another for the legs, like hydraulics, and cut down COD buttresses as the main beams, with IG tank track Guards as a sort of Armour plating. The toes are to be plasticard - like a small warhound titan's feet.
It'd have "wings" made from angled Tau vehicle conversions (Sky ray?) with weapons slung under, Maybe a Tau Barricuda, or something smaller with a "Wing" type cross section. It would be angled at approx 45 degrees to vertical, or maybe a bit more (maybe 70 degrees).
For the weapons, i was thinking a whirlwind cut in two for missile launchers, with the ends of the "Wings" finished with two valk hellstrike missiles (easy wing finish too)
Under the wing joining the main body would be a vulcan mega bolter off the shadowsword kit, maybe "Nose" mounted, or cut in two and put in either side. There'd be lights leftover from the valk (The left nose sensor array comes with three options, two have a "Grid" style light, one at the top and one at the bottom. flip it upside down and it's two sides with the light at the bottom) . Maybe a SM radar dish suspended at the end of a IG hunter killer support beam for a comms array.
For the main body a Valk rear section - including the engines (but no wing ... hang on....another wing option just came up) cut up to the heavy bolter. It would be the jump pack engines, at the same angle as the aerodynamic parts.
I'd have a special squad of IG vets dedicated, who can jump out of it (but not back in) - I was thinking elysian grav chutes on cadians with pig iron respirator heads (done that for my vendettas) and shotguns (The last of my necromunda shotgun stash). they'd get a special paint job, and maybe converted shoulder pads (The baneblade commander ones are tempting, they're in the valk kit too)
It'll take months, and not a small budget, but I reckon i could do a decent job.
Yep, i've really planned this out now, from theme and IA style equipment details (History, why it's so rare, how and why it was produced, and a little story to go with it. There's going to be 2x Versions "Onaero" class troop carrier, with lighter armour and energy weapons due to lack of ammo space and "Haikido" Class, with Heavy armour and much more heavier weaponry used for search and destroy missions.)
I was going to use a valk for the troop one, and a vulture for the heavier one.
The modelling is planned :
One Valkarie, with the cockpit as the nose, attached to the main body at about 75 degrees to the compartment (angled sloping down). The wings will be cut down, and the Tail "shafts" used as leg parts. The smaller fins from the back will be used on the arms / legs to make it look more airworthy (going to watch some anime for inspiration, but prob top of the wing or ankle) and the legs will be bulked out with plasticard tubing as hydraulics (Thought through for extra detail) and guitar wire as electrics (maybe not on the legs, but with the weapons). The wings will end with the hellfire missiles. I've got my hands on a old forgeworld valk seating, which will be suspended by the unused valk landing struts, with the second purchase, a drop pod's harnesses installed so the troops could be transported by it (they would load when the cabin's level, and leave by grav chute (forgeworld ones to be used. Exit only, no re-entry)) The drop pod doors would be used as titan-esque shin guards and the drop pod fins would be used behind the leg (with the bolt section cut out, and maybe the descent turbines used for detail somewhere)
I need to work out the hip join assembly, as although fairly light (mostly plastic) it needs a firm join (and maybe the legs need more strength) - I'm considering two plastic plumbing tubes, one smaller than the other, with three large sections forming the hips and the thin one going in the middle (Not just thorougly plastic glued but repeatedly pinned to ensure a good firm join)
For the weapons, the heavy gets a stormlord's mega bolter cut in half and assembled either side of the cockpit, and the Onaero gets two multilasers. Both have wings ended with hellstrikes, (Simple and good way of finishing it off) and wing mounted weapons - Twin linked Lascannons for the heavy and twin heavy bolters or Aegis defence line Autocannons for the Onaero (maybe the autocannons go to the heavy and laser weapons go to the transport for fluff)
I was considering adding a whirlwind's missile launchers to the Onaero, and a Tau sky ray to the heavy with a wrack of 6-8 hellstrike missiles (function as per normal rules, but if you fire more than one in a turn the templates join - lay the first and scatter the others.)
for sensor detail i was going to get the valk's two sensor lights, one with a light at the top, and the one with the light at the bottom, and not install the right nose weapon, just flip the left section around and fit it so there's two lights either side of the nose with lights at the same level). Then i'd add either a land raider new oval airial dish, or the DA special sensor bits, if they needed aerodynamic cowling i'd use half a old style searchlight (without the teeth)
For rules i was looking at a revenant's agile rule, and scout with 2 structure points, a void shield, AV12 all round (more for the heavy at the front) and weapons (or troop capacity) to be finalised. I'd give it restrictions on weapon firing unless it moves 6" or less (for balance during recoil amongst other things) and make the drive damaged do flight or movement (both prob more severe than drop 1/2). I was considering 750 (Onaero) / 1,000 points (Haikido) for points, (Although the troops in the Onaero will cost about 250 so they're both the same in a apoc game) weapons, playtesting and opponents advice to be done first.
For the troops:
I was going to do a vet squad with respirator heads, grav chutes, shotguns, p.fist and meltas originally, but that's boring.
I was going to make a special "Banzai charge" squad, I'd use vets (WS swapped with BS) as the basis, and the points difference between penal troopers and a standard squad being added, but stubborn, the LD (different on troops) and the "psycopaths" rule added permanantly to reflect a sort of samurai charge (Counter attack, fleet (grav chutes used as light jump packs) and furious charge (+1 init, +1 STR works well with samurai swords I feel). They'd be armed with swords (get catchan swords and file to a straighter profile, must research katana more), las pistols (not a vet weapon option, but I also have run out of shotguns) and maybe the sgnt has a detailed helmet (enclosed samurai style, just add respirator plugs) - and, obviously power sword (Or pike / must research weapons more). Maybe I'd add some special weapons - flamers (elysian due to grav chute) or melta (it's a compulsion.) The amount of swords i have will help decide. Approx 135 points (100 for squad with psycopaths), p/sword, flamer and 2x melta.
They'd be joined by a special character, Based around sly Marbo's points and rules, less "He's behind you" and the demo charge (or keep it?) but adding Rending (Samurai sword in expert hands) and maybe one "Parry" - make opponent re-roll one to hit die.
If i added a priest (flagellant based) with eviscerator It'd be about 250 points.
